INTRODUCTION.

AMONG the many excellencies of the Liturgy of the Church of England there are few greater, though few, perhaps, less noticed or less valued, than that which is to be found in the course of Scripture reading for the Sundays and Chief Festivals. To the members of that Church it must be well known how vast a portion of Scripturein the reading of the Psalins, the Lessons, and the Epistle and Gospel—is brought before their minds in the course of the year. But by few even of these does it seem to be known that for every Sunday and Chief Festival there are some one or more truths appointed for special consideration and prayer; that these truths are arranged in a certain order, and that four of the portions of Scripture read during these days are so chosen, that, by a comparison of them with each other, the subjects thus presented may be explained or illustrated or confirmed. These subjects for consideration and prayer are contained in the Collect; and the four portions of Scripture referred to are the Epistle and Gospel, and the first Lessons.*

The course commences with the first Sunday in Advent. For this and the three following Sundays the leading

*The Second Lessons for the Sundays, with the exception of Easter and Trinity Sunday, and the Psalms, are taken in the order of the Calender.
