Monthly. 2d. Printed by ALFRED GADSBY, 17, Bouverie Street, Fleet Street, London. E.C. PREFACE. Dear Reader, The Sermons of Ralph Erskine have been too long known and loved in the church of Christ to require my feeble commendation. They carry with them their own evidence, as being the wise and gracious productions of a wise and gracious man of God. I have long felt that such Sermons cannot be too widely spread and too carefully read and digested. Many feel there is a great deficiency in the ministry of many of the servants of God in the present day, in addresses to sinners and exhortations to saints. Such deficiency is not to be found in Ralph Erskine's Sermons. "Knowing the terror of the Lord," he "persuaded men;" and knowing that the outward call of the gospel is God's appointed instrument for the bringing the chosen sheep to the fold, he used that call freely. Indeed, some few of his expressions on this subject I have thought not quite consistent with the analogy of faith, and have ventured very slight abridgements or alterations; but this liberty has been but sparingly taken. My object in printing the Sermons in this form, has been the giving them a wider spread, especially among the less wealthy of the lovers of spiritual, Bible divinity. This First Volume I commend to that blessed Spirit whose sacred anointing evidently rested, in rich measure, upon their writer, in composing and delivering them, praying that he will use them for the conversion of sinners and the edification of his dear chosen, blood-bought sheep. I rest, dear Reader, Yours to serve in the glorious gospel of Christ, SHEFFORD, BEDS, SEPTIMUS SEARS. October, 1863. SERMON I. Page 3.
