I. Government receive advice that a formidable French fleet, with feveral thoufard troops on board, had anchored in Bantry Bay, on the fouthern coaft of Ireland. Lord Bridport, with the fleet at Spithead, failed in quest of them, but arrived in Bantry Bay three days after the French had quitted it. A large fhip armed, a frigate, & tranfport full of troops, were taken y the British cruifers; the latter is fuppiled to have funk in the night. In conkquence of the recent attempt of the French to invade Ireland, and an apprehenfion that Britain would next be their object, a gemural Spirit animates the country; a very confiderable addition is made to the Volunteer corps; and the farmers in every diftrid offer their horses and carts for the conveyance of troops, &c. 7. A riot at Carle, on account of the fupplementary miEa a. ro. The fortrefs of Kehl taken Ly the Auftrians, after a vigorous fiege of two months. 16. American papers announced that New York, Bolton, Baltimore, and Savannah, had been partly deAroyed by fires. 17. The infurgents in

the islands of Grenada and St Vincent completely fubdued, and tranquillity effectually restored in thefe fettlements. 18. Letters from America announce that Mr Adams and Mr Jefferfon had been elected prefident and vice prefident of the United States.

1. Colonel Frederick, fon of Theodore, king of Corfica, fhot himself under the porch of the weft gate of Weftminster.abb. 3. Intelligence received of the total defeat of the Auftrian forces in Italy, by General Buonaparte's army, between the 19th and 27th of January. The lofs of the Auftrians, as certified by the French Generals, confifted of 6 co men killed and wounded, 20,000 taken prifoners, 60 pieces ef cannon, 24 standards, fome of which were worked with the Emprefs's own hands, and all the cattle, grain, and other neceffaries, fuftined for the relief of Mantua. Several important pofts alfo fell into the hands of the French. 10. A dreadful earthquake happened in South America, by which 41,000 lives were loft. 14. The Britif ftet under the command of Sir John Jer, K. B. compofed of 15 ships of the line, attacked the Spanish fleet, confifting of 25 frips of the line, off Cape St Vincent, and captured four; two of 112 guns, one of 84, and one of 74. To expreis the grateful fenfe of the nation for this important fervice, his Majefty foon after created Sir John

Jervis an English Peer, by the rank and - title of Earl St Vincent. The Paris papers brought an account of Buonaparte having penetrated into the papal territories, captured feveral important pofts, killed a great number of his holiness's troops, and that he was proceeding on his march to Rome. 17. The island of Trinidad, in South America, taken by Gen. Sir Ralph Abercromby and Rear-Admiral Harvey, 3 fail of the line, and a frigate burnt, and a 74 gun fhip taken, crews ali taken prifouers. 22Some French troops, amounting to 1200 men, were difembarked from two frigates on the coaft of Pembrok fhire, but the force of the country being fpeedily drawn toge ther, the whole party furrendered prifoners of war. 26. An order of council iffued, for fufpending the iffue of cash by the bank, on account of the great demands lately made upon it. 27. In confequence of an order of his Majefty's Privy Council, the Bank of England difcontinue iffuing cash in payment of their notes. The most refpectable merchants, bankers, and tradefmen, at a meeting held, figned an agreement to take bank notes in payment. Notes of 20s. and 40s. were foon after iffued, and payment was made in dollars, on which a finall medallion of the King of Great Britain was ftamped, rated at 4s. 9d. each, for bank notes, tendered to the amount of gl. or under.
