UNCLE

[NCLE TOM'S CABIN. By Mrs. STOWE. The Illustrated Edition, with Engravings from Designs by J. Gilbert, W. Harvey, &c., and a Preface written expressly for this edition by the Earl of Carlisle.

"This is a stirring and thrilling book-written on behalf of the poor slave. Its pages are animated, vivid, graphic, genial, and human. The dramatic skill is equal to the inventive genius. There is the stamp of original power in every page. Prefaces in general we abominate, but the preface of the Earl of Carlisle is so strikingly unique, as to form a memorable exception. With the eloquence and richness of a Macaulay, it combines the high philanthropy of an Howard, the sympathetic.humanity of a Wilberforce, the elegance of the most finished writer, and the enlarged views of the statesman. If anything could enhance the attractiveness of Uncle Tom's Cabin,' this preface is calculated to achieve that seeming impossibility." "In ordering, be specially careful to order Routledge's Edition, as no others can contain Lord Carlisle's Preface.

[blocks in formation]

"The popularity of Sheridan Knowles's dramatic works has induced the present publishers to issue an elegant, and at the same time an extremely cheap, edition of the poet. This edition is now before the public, and there can be no question that it will be speedily exhausted by the desire to possess it. Sheridan Knowles is, in fact, the most successful dramatist of the present day; and his plays have been, and still form, the delight of thousands. Hitherto, however, these plays have only been obtainable in a detached form-several of them indeed have been some time out of print; the student of art dramatic had therefore no means of comparing the advance of the poet at the several epochs of his poetical career. Consequently the publication of the whole in a compact, cheap, and elegant form, is a boon which cannot be too highly appreciated by the public. The plays comprise sixteen in all-eight in each volume-and the collection commences with Caius Gracchus,' written in 1823, and ends with the last production of the author, The Secretary.' There is, therefore, a large mass of reading in these volumes. The type, however, is so clear, and the paper so good, that perusal is an additional pleasure; and, under these circumstances the work can be recommended in the highest terms of praise to the public."-Observer, Dec. 9, 1855.

In 4 vols. crown 8vo, price 108., or in 2 vols. cloth gilt, 10s.

BOSWELL'S LIFE

of DR. JOHNSON, with numerous Portraits, Views, and Characteristic Designs, engraved from authentic sources. "Homer is not more decidedly the first of heroic poets, Shakspeare is not more decidedly the first of dramatists, Demosthenes is not more decidedly the first of orators, than Boswell is the first of biographers. Many of the greatest men that have ever lived have written biography. Boswell was one of the smallest men that ever lived, and he has beaten them all. His was talent, and uncommon talent, and to Jemmy Boswell we indeed owe many hours of supreme delight.”—Macaulay.

In 2 vols. crown 8vo, cloth, price 58.; or in One vol. cloth gilt, 5s.

THE HISTORY of EXTRAORDINARY POPULAR

"These volumes will captivate the attention of readers who, according to their various tempers, feel either inclined to laugh at or sigh over the follies of mankind."-Times.

"A popular name for a book exactly of the kind calculated to be popular. The subjects are treated with much talent, and the whole forms a very amusing work for readers of every class."-Literary Gazette.
