in the lustre of genuine goodness when those parents are laid in the dust.

Holy Father, give me a clear understanding of the truths I should inculcate, and help me to adapt them to the minds and conditions of my pupils. Above all, I pray to be a pattern of the excellence I recommend. O let me be what I profess; and do as well as teach. On all occasions may I honor my religion before them by showing its control over my temper and conduct. May I learn from thee how to love them, and teach them by my example how to love thee. Let my deportment be courteous, the tones of my voice persuasive, and all my feelings like his who took little children in his arms and blessed them. God of mercy, give me thy holy Spirit, that I may make their souls to become temples fit for thee; and to thee, through endless ages, shall be given the glory and the praise. Amen.

I can remember. O Lord, take care of me, and make me a good and happy child. Amen.

FOR A YOUNG CHILD.

My Father in heaven; thou art very great and good. Thou didst make the sun and the moon and the stars. Thou makest the clouds to move in the sky, and sendest down the rain from heaven. Thou makest the summer and winter. Thou keepest me alive in the day-time and in the night. Thou hast given me kind parents. I thank thee for all these good things. I wish to love thee more and more every day, and to do what will please thee. I wish to love my parents more, and to do all they tell me. O Lord, look down upon me, and bless me, and make me a good and happy child. Amen.

FOR A CHILD.-MORNING.

My Father and my God; thou hast taken care of me while I was asleep. I thank thee for the pleasant light of this morning. The darkness goeth away, and the day-light cometh at thy command. I thank thee for all thy goodness to me and to others. I am thy child. I ask thy blessing. Make me wise, good, contented, and useful. Keep me from doing wrong this day. Let me not be impatient, or fretful, or angry; but may I be a gentle and pleasant child. I am so little I cannot take care of myself. Thou hast given me

kind parents, who provide clothes and food and books for me. O God, bless my father and mother, and may I obey them and make them very happy. Keep me far from wicked children, so that I may not learn their evil ways. Help me to become wiser and better every day, so that I may grow up for heaven; and when I die may I go to thee and Jesus Christ, and to all good people who have died before me. Amen.

FOR A CHILD.-EVENING.

Almighty God, thou delightest to hear the prayer of a little child. Thou hast let me live through another day, and given me what is best for me; and now before I close my eyes in sleep, I wish to thank thee in my heart for the good things I have received. I thank thee for the light of the sun; for the friends who instruct me; for food and raiment; for a home to shelter me, and a bed wherein I may rest my weary body. Help me to remember how I have spent this day; and if I have felt or said or done any thing wrong, may I be so sorry for my faults that I shall do better to-morrow. I wish to be more kind and more industrious every day. Let not my lips speak evil of others, nor my heart wish them any pain, nor my hands do them any mischief; but may I speak the truth always, and do unto others 1

as I wish them to do to me. May I love my parents and teachers, and listen to their advice. May I love my brothers and sisters, and all mankind; and love thee more than all besides, so that I may be fitted to live with thee and Jesus Christ in heaven.

I think of poor people, and those who are sick and unhappy. Pity them, O Lord, and help me to pity them.

My heavenly Father, I am now going to sleep. Thou seest me by night as well as by day. Keep me safe, and awake me in the morning in health. If I should die in the night, take me to heaven where I may be happy forever. Amen.

FOR A YOUTH.-MORNING.

Almighty God, Maker of heaven and earth, thou hast created me by thy power, preserved me by thy care, and supported me by thy goodness. I am indebted to thee for all that I have; I am dependant on thee for all that I want; and I owe to thee all that I can do. Thou hast watched over me during the defenceless hours of the night. I have slept in safety and awoke in health. Early will I seek and praise and thank thee. I sincerely thank thee for that bountiful providence which has nourished and cheered me. I thank thee for my reason, education and religion; for all the

gifts of nature and grace; for our Saviour, Christ; for my redemption, and instruction in the truth; for thy repeated calls to me; for all the patience which has waited for me, and the mercy which has spared me; for the enjoyments of this present life; and for the promises and hopes of a better life to come.

O God, may these mercies lead me to love thee more and serve thee better; to love Jesus Christ more and serve him better; to love my [parents and] friends more and serve them better; and to be more willing to do to others as I wish others should do to me. O make me sensible of the importance of having right principles and habits on my entrance into active life. May I remember that I am now forming a character, which must affect my condition and happiness in this world and in the next. O may this day, and every day, find me keeping a constant guard over my thoughts, passions and conversation. Let me remember that thine eye is always fixed upon me. May I be temperate, chaste, sincere, faithful and diligent. Help me to embrace the good and avoid the evil which I see in others. Let me choose for my companions those who love and fear thee, and let me wisely shun the snares of wicked company. I desire to imitate the youthful piety of Jesus; that, like him, I may grow in wisdom as I grow in age. Thus may I repay the care and affection which are manifested for me, and thus
