13 Thro'heav'n'swide arch athund'ring peal God's angry voice did loudly roar, While earth's fad face with heaps of hail, and flakes of fire, was cover'd o'er. 14 His fharpen'd arrows round he threw, which made his fcatter'd foesretreat;} The Third Part. 16 The Lord did on my fide engage, from heav'n, his throne, my cause upheld; And fnatch'd me from the furious rage of threat'ning waves that proudly fwell'd. 17 God his refiftlefs pow'r employ'd, Who elfe with eafe had foon deftroy'd 18 Their fubtil rage had near prevail'd, But ftill, when other fuccours fail'd, 19 From dangers that inclos'd me round, For fome juft caufe his goodness found, 20 Because in me no guilt remains, My hands are free from bloody ftains, 21, 22 For I his judgments kept in fight, I never did his ftatutes flight, my ftrongeft foes' attempts to break; the weak defence that I could make. when I diftreft and friendlefs lay; God was my firm fupport and ftay. he brought me forth and fet me free; that mov'd him to delight in me. God does his gracious help extend; therefore the Lord is ftill my friend. in his juft paths I always trod; nor loosely wander'd from my God. did e'en from darling fins refrain; because my heart and hands are clean. 23, 24 But still my foul, fincere and pure, His favours, therefore, yet endure, The Fourth Part. 25, 26 Thou fuit'ft, O Lord, thy righteous ways to various paths of human kind; whofe darkness he has turn'd to light. and did o'er num'rous foes prevail; the beft defended walls to scale. 27, 28 That he the humble foul will fave, and crush the haughty's boafted might, In me the Lord an inftance gave, 29 On his firm fuccour I rely'd, Nor fear'd, whilft he was on my fide, 30 For God's defigns fhall ftill fucceed; He's a ftrong fhield to all that need, 31 Who then deferves to be ador'd, Or who, except the mighty Lord. his word will bear the utmost teft: and on his fure protection reft. but God, on whom my hopes depend can with retiftlefs pow'r defend? The Fifth Part. 32, 33 "Tis God that girds my armour on, and all my jufl defigns fulfils; Through him my feet can fwiftly run, and nimbly climb the fteepeft hills. and manly weapons learn to wield forc'd by my ftronger arms to yield. protects me from affaulting foes; and greatnefs from his bounty flows. till then to narrow paths confin'd; the method of my ffeps defign d. and flying fquadrons captive take; till I a final conqueft make. their vanquish'd heads again to rear, beneath my feet, and grovel there. recruits myftrength, my courage warms; fubdu'd by my prevailing arms. my conqu'ring feet in triumph prefs; who hate and envy my fuccefs. 41 With loud complaints allfriends they try'd, but none was able to defend ; At length to God for help they cry'd, 42 Like flying duft which winds purfue, Their flaughter'd bodies forth I threw, like but God would no affiftance lend. their broken troops I fcatter'd round, loathfome dirt that clogs the ground The Sixth Part. 43 Our factious tribes, at ftrife till now, The heathen to my fceptre bow, 44 Remoteft realms their homage fend, Strangers for my commands attend, 45 All to my fummons tamely yield, For ftronger holds they quit the field, 46 Let the eternal Lord be prais'd, O'er highest heav'ns his Name be rais'd, 47 "Tis God that ftill fupports my right, "Tis he that with refiftlefs might 48 My univerfal fafeguard he! He made me great, and set me free 49 Therefore to celebrate his fame And nations, ftrangers to his Name, 50" God to his king deliv'rance fends, "His mercy evermore extends PSALM HE heav'ns declare thy glory, Lord, The firmament and flars exprefs 2 The dawn of each returning day From darkest night's fucceffive rounds 3 Their pow'rful language to no realm Tis nature's voice, and understood 4 Their doctrine does its facred fenfe Whose bright contents the circling fun -5 No bridegroom, for his nuptials dreft, No giant does like him rejoice 6 From eaft to weft, from weft to eaft, And through his progrefs cheerful light The Second 7 God's perfect law converts the foul, With facred wifdom his fure word 8 The statutes of the Lord are juft, His pure commands, in fearch of truth, 9 His perfect worship here is fix'd, His equal laws are in the scales 10 Of more efteem than golden mines, More fweet than honey, or the drops 11 My trufty counfellors they are, Divine rewards attend on thofe 12 But what frail man obferves how oft O cleanse me from my fecret faults, 13 Let no prefumptuous fin, O Lord, That, by thy grace preferv'd, I may 14 So thail my pray'r and praifes be And I, fecure on thy defence, by God's appointment me obey; and foreign nations own my way. when my fuccefsful name they hear charm'd with refpect, or aw'd by fear. or foon in battle are dismay'd; and ftill in ftrongeft holds afraid. the rock on whofe defence I reft; who me with his falvation bleft. his juft revenge my foes purfues; fierce nations to my yoke fubdues. from whom my lafting honours flow; from my remorfelefs bloody foe. my grateful voice to heav'n I'll raile; fhall thus be taught to fing his praife. fhews his anointed fignal grace; to David and his promis'd race." XIX. which that alone can fill; their great Creator's fkill. fresh beams of knowledge brings; divine inftruction springs. or region is confin'd; alike by all mankind. through earth's extent difplay; does round the world convey. has fuch a cheerful face; to run his glorious race. his reftlefs courfe he goes; and vital warmth beftows. Part. reclaims from falfe defires; the ignorant infpires. and bring fincere delight; afift the feebleft fight. on fure foundations laid; of truth and juftice weigh'd. or gold refin'd with skill; that from the comb diftil. and friendly warnings give; who by thy precepts live. he does from virtue fall? thou God that know'ft them all. dominion have o'er me; the great tranfgreflion flee. with thy acceptance bleft; my strength and faviour, reft. XX. and hear thee in diftrefs: and grant thy arms fuccefs. and ftrength from Sion give; thy facrifice receive. thy counfels ftill direct; to bring them to effect. we cheerfully repair, "The Lord accept thy pray'r." 6 Our hopes are fix'd, that now the Lord From heav'n refiftlefs aid afford, 7 Some truft in fteeds for war defign'd, Against them all we'll call to mind our fov'reign will defend; 8 But from their fleeds and chariots thrown, behold them thro' the plain, Disorder'd, broke, and trampled down, 9 Still fave us, Lord, and ftill proceed Hear, King of heav'n, in times of need, PSALM The king, Lord, with fongs of praise 2 For thou, whate'er his lips request, But haft with thy acceptance bleft whilft firm our troops remain. our rightful caufe to blefs; the pray'rs that we address. PSALM XXIV.
