A Correction

A Horace Greeley brand of chirography on the back of a photograph led us to decipher the name of the general contractors of the Borden Building, New York, as "Cauldwell-Urnjake. A translation of the hieroglyphics by one who knows what they were intended to mean, informs us that the name should read "Cauldwell-Wingate." Which once more moves us to say: When writing proper names in long-hand please print them clearly.

Electric Power in Japan

The electric industry of Japan, says the Asahi, is principally run by means of water power, and the employment of this power will grow. The water power available is considerable, but the methods now adopted by private companies are imperfect and extravagant for the most part. Furthermore, there is such keen competition among the applicants for water-power rights that they are often secured merely for speculative purposes and without any intention of using them. Of the estimated unused water-power capacity, more than 3 000 000 horsepower has already been granted to private concerns, but it is doubtful if the holders of these rights will start work within the next ten years.

The sink is made of porcelain with two integral drainboards, supported on porcelain pedestals. The supply to the tank is carried through a thermostatic valve which automatically will maintain any pre-determined temperature; the valve will not deliver water at a scalding temperature, and is so constructed that if the cold water supply should fail the valve will close instantly. A tank is provided on this combination to reduce the pressure of the water which passes through the valve, so that the water will feed to the sprays by gravity only, thus preventing a high pressure that would injure the skin of an infant.
