XVIII THE VALVE WORLD PUBLISHED BY CRANE CO., CHICAGO CHICAGO, SEPTEMBER, 1921 DISARMAMENT IN the initiative taken by the President of the United States for the purpose of bringing about a reduction in National armaments, history repeats itself. And may the repetition continue until the historic parallel is complete. It was the influence of a letter written by Secretary of State Monroe in 1814, just after the War of 1812, to the American Minister in London that resulted in the practically complete disarmament of the borders between the United States and Canada and in more than one hundred years of unbroken peace between the two closely situated neighboring nations. As one commentator says: "You may search all the records of diplomacy as far back as diplomacy has existed and find no single act that displays broader wisdom or greater moral courage, or that has been more prolific of beneficial results." It is not too much to hope that the present proposition, coming from the same national source and directed in the main to the influence of the same peace-loving people, eventually will result in a far wider beating of the implements of war into the tools of peace and industry, and that, out of the conferences soon to be held in Washington may go forth the first really practical worldwide preventive of war and destruction and waste that humanity has known. WORD "JAZZY" SCHOOL PUPILS AND COMPULSORY TRAINING comes through the daily press from a Southern California city that "students dropping out of high school has become such a serious problem that it is necessary to take definite steps to solve it." One high school principal blames the condition on "jazz, autos, movies, and sensationalism. Students are constantly demanding more dances and more movies. They are heedless of good counsel, and resent authority." The certain cure for all this is quite simple, because it is quite natural. Make compulsory mental and physical training for citizenship and democracy general throughout this country. Give to every boy and girl of school age and until the attainment of No. 9 |
