PREFACE.

ALL learning is an exploring expedition with or without a guide; and learners, like explorers, ought to start from home already trained and equipped amongst known and familiar scenes, before they try unknown and unfamiliar.

This self-evident truth at once puts an end to all those attempts to teach the unknown by the unknown, which have wrought so much confusion, and sends us back home to begin there. Learning is an action of the mind. Home, therefore, to the learner will be the first beginning of mental action or thought, as shown in the first expression of it— language, his mother tongue.

The fact of speaking a language at once puts the speaker in possession of a large amount of ready material where he is at home. Every man ought to begin by learning the principles of language, and why he speaks in a certain way, and not merely to use language by rote. This little book is intended to show how simple thoughts are conveyed by language, and why. It has nothing to do with
