HUDSON'S "Life, Art, and CHARACTERS of ShakespeaRE (2 vols.) is uniform in size and binding with the THE HARVARD EDITION, and is sold at the following retail prices: Cloth, $4.00 per set; half-calf $8.00 per set.

THE HARVARD EDITION has been undertaken and the plan of it shaped with a special view to making the Poet's pages pleasant and attractive to general readers. Within the last thirty years great advances and additions have been made in the way of preparation for such a work, and these volumes bring the whole matter of Shakespeare up abreast with the latest researches.

The first volume contains "the Burbage portrait," and a life of the Poet. A history of each play is given in its appropriate volume. The plays are arranged in three distinct series: Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies; and the plays of each series presented, as nearly as may be, in the chronological order of the writing.

An obvious merit of this edition is, that each volume has two sets of notes,—one mainly devoted to explaining the text, and placed at the foot of the page; the other mostly occupied with matters of textual comment and criticism, and printed at the end of each play. The edition is thus admirably suited to the uses both of the general reader and of the special student. The foot-notes supply such and so much of explanatory comment as may be required by people who read Shakespeare, not to learn philology or the technicalities of the scholiast, but to learn Shakespeare himself; to take in his thought, to taste his wisdom, and to feel his beauty.

THE LEADING FACTS OF ENGLISH HISTORY.

By D. H. MONTGOMERY.

Second Edition, rewritten, 453 pages, including Full Maps and Tables.

I.

The former edition has been rewritten, as it had become evident that a work on the same plan, but more comprehensive, and better suited for prevailing courses and methods of class-work, would be still more heartily welcomed.

II.

Important events are treated with greater fulness, and the relation of English History to that of Europe and the world is carefully shown. References for further study are added.

III.

The text is in short paragraphs, each with a topical heading in bold type for the student's use. The headings may be made to serve the purpose of questions. By simply passing them over, the reader has a clear, continuous narrative.

IV.

The treatment of each reign is closed with a brief summary of its principal points. Likewise at the end of each period there is a section showing the condition of the country, and its progress in Government, Religion, Military Affairs, Learning and Art, General Industry, Manners and Customs. These summaries will be found of the greatest value for reference, review, and fuller study; but when the book is used for a brief course, or for general reading, they may be omitted. An appendix gives a Constitutional Summary.

V.

No pains have been spared to make the execution of the work equal to its plan. Vivid touches here and there betray the author's mastery of details. Thorough investigation has been made of all points where there was reason to doubt traditional statements. The proof-sheets have been carefully read by two experienced high-school teachers, and also by two college professors of history.

VI.

The text is illustrated with fourteen maps, and supplemented with full genealogical and chronological tables.

FRENCH HISTORY.

By D. H. MONTGOMERY,

AUTHOR OF THE LEADING FACTS OF ENGLISH HISTORY, ENGLISH HISTORY

READER, ETC.

Introduction Price, $1.12.

The object of this volume is to present, within the compass of about two hundred and fifty pages, the most important events of the history of France, selected, arranged, and treated according to the soundest principles of historical study, and set forth in a clear and attractive narrative.

The work is based on the highest French authorities, — Guizot, Rambaud, Martin, and Duruy, but all points demanding special consideration have been carefully compared with the views of the best English writers on France.

The general plan of treatment is practically the same as that pursued in the author's "Leading Facts of English History." The attention of teachers is particularly called to the following summary:

1.

:

The respective influences of the Celtic race, and of the Roman and the German conquest and occupation of Gaul are clearly shown.

2. Charlemagne's work and the subsequent growth of feudal

institutions are next considered.

3. The breaking up of the feudal system, with the gradual consolidation of the provinces into one kingdom, and the development of the sentiment of nationality, are traced and illustrated.

4.

The growth of the absolutism of the crown, the interesting and important relations of France to America, and the causes of the French Revolution are fully presented.

5.

The career of Napoleon and its effects on France and Europe are carefully examined.

6. Finally, a sketch is given of the stages of the historical progress of France in connection with the state of the Republic

to-day.

The work is illustrated with fourteen Maps and complete Genealogical and Chronological Tables. It is also furnished with explanatory foot-notes where they seem to be required. Each section of the history is followed by a brief summary of the ground gone over.

THIS book is a revised and enlarged edition of a work published some ten years ago under the same title. been generally accepted as one of the best nation of the principles and methods of the United States government. The author has taken advantage of a demand for a new edition to revise, enlarge and rewrite certain parts of the work. The material of the book has also been rearranged so that it can be used more advantageously as a high grade text-book for use in schools.

The author, Miss Anna L. Dawes, has had exceptional advantages in the preparation of this book,— being the daughter of Senator Henry L. Dawes of Massachusetts. The experience gained by this venerable statesman in a career of over forty eventful years in public life has always been at the author's service. Her treatment of the somewhat difficult subject of Civil Government has been such as fully to meet all the requirements of a book necessary to interest and instruct young people. The ground is fully and thoroughly covered and the information accurate.

The text of the Constitution is first given, and there are separate chapters devoted to Congress and its powers, to the Senate and the House of Representatives. The method of electing a President is clearly explained, his duties are defined, and the divisions and work of the Executive department marked out.

The judicial system is described and prominence given to the rights of the individual. The duties of a citizen are emphatically pointed out. The state governments and their relation to the national government are fully discussed; and the government and jurisdiction of the territories are made plain.

In brief, this excellent book in its revised form is sure to captivate the reader not only by its charming and lucid style but especially by the interesting narrative of facts which it presents.
