A very interesting article reviewing Horace Heidt. My father, Richard Melari is mentioned and was on the show. While I can appreciate the words of the day, what the author failed to know about my dad is that while he was really good at his impressions, it was his natural voice that stole the show. Actor Danny Kay told him in person that he would be better off pursuing his career with his natural singing voice than his impressions of famous singers. The problem there is my father told me the kids were under strict orders from Heidt to do as he wished, and for my dad that was doing his impressions. My father cut a few singles, one being on the Kimm record label, and the beautiful song In Napoli, written by Chatta Johnson, is a fine example of his natural voice. Portions of the song are sung in Italian. He also did a rendition of Begin the Beguine in his own voice, which was a local and fan favorite. After his stint with Heidt, my dad continued to perform in night clubs up through the 70's, mostly in Erie, PA. and had a fine amount of success. The crowd favorite was when he did his Elvis act, especially All Shook Up! It never failed to bring down the house. Thanks for having this site available, it is well presented. Gary Melari
