In the tenth Book of the LuSIAD of CAMOENS, the Goddefs predicts to Gamu, the fature Conquests of the Portuguese in India. After enume rating the heroic Actions of Pacheco, fhe laments bis Fate in the following Paffage, to which Mr. Haftings, continuing the predictions to his own Times, added the fucceeding Lines; which are diftinguished by inverted Commas.

THE lofty fong, for paleness o'er her fpread, The nymph fufpends, and bows the languid head;

Her faultering words are breath'd in plaintive fighs,

Ah! Belifarius! injur'd chief, fhe cries, Ah! wipe thy tears; in war thy rival fee,

Godlike Pacheco falls defpoil'd like thee, In him, in thee, difhonour'd virtue bleeds,

And valour weeps to view her fairest deeds;

Weeps o'er Pacheco where forlorn he lies

Deep in the dungeon's gloom, and friendlefs dies.
