EXPLANATORY NOΤΕ,

It will aid the reader in the use of the following catalogue, to bear in mind, that this is not a classified catalogue, nor technically speaking, a descriptive catalogue, neither does it attempt to furnish the popular designation of Books,-about which there would probably be no uniform agreement.

The plan adopted has been, firstly, to place each work, alphabetically, under the name, if known, cr nom de plume of the author, editor or translator (making the proper distinction in the latter cases); and, secondly, under its literal title, or, if abridged, to do so as nearly as possible in the words of the original. On the shelves, the Books are arranged numerically, and classified according to subject.

Consideration of size and price, has compelled the abridgment of lengthy titles of Books, and the omission of all personal titles, unless essential parts of names, or when used by way of explanation, when the christian names are not known, and to distinguish authors having the same initials.

For volumes of "Executive Documents" wholly devoted to one subject, the reader is referred to the letters to which their specific titles respectively belong; and, for late volumes of Reports originally published in separate form, to the "Executive" or "Miscellaneous" Documents of subsequent years.

The subject of a memoir or life, is not necessarily to be found under the appropriate letter, except the work is partially or altogether autobiographical.

Books without an acknowledged or attributed authorship, can, of course, only be found in the "Catalogue by titles."

*Provision has been made in the numbering for future additions to the several departments.
