ten to twenty thousand godly seamen. The numbers are rapidly multiplying; and we have the satisfaction of knowing, that pious masters and men are faithfully carrying out their own principles, in active exertions on behalf of their brethren, wherever they go. We can point to captains of ships, who have been made instrumental in the salvation of their whole crew. Nor is it in our own efforts alone that we rejoice. Kindred Institutions, both at home and abroad, as will be seen from our DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE, have been equally successful in their sacred and benevolent design. Increased provision now exists to meet the case and exigency of the sailor;—a greater number of agencies are employed,—a better and more powerful combination of means are in operation, while the facilities for working out the most enlarged and comprehensive plans were never more favourable. The steadily increasing sale of the work, is the best evidence we could have of the estimation in which it is held. May we be permitted to add, that we think the contents of the present volume will be found not less varied, interesting, and important, than those of its predecessor. To our numerous and esteemed CORRESPONDENTS we feel under renewed obligation; and hope that they will kindly continue their efficient and valuable aid to the work. In no department of this labour must we relax till the end is reached, and the abundance of the sea is converted! 2, JEFFREY-SQUARE, ST. MARY AXE, London, December, 1840.
