ADDRESS BY SENATOR JOHNSON

On the announcement that Hon. Hiram W. Johnson, Senator from California, would extend to San Francisco his tour in opposition to the Peace Treaty the Board of Governors invited him to address the Commonwealth Club of California at a luncheon meeting. The invitation was accepted and the occasion was made a joint meeting in co-operation with the San Francisco Advertising Club, the Down Town Association, the Home Industry League, and the Rotary Club.

The luncheon was held at the Palace Hotel on Wednesday, October 1, 1919, about 1600 members of the five clubs and official guests being present. President Boynton, by request of the speaker, was selected as chairman of the meeting, and introduced Senator Johnson as follows:

Remarks by President Boynton

Senator Johnson, we, of the Down Town Association, the Advertising, Commonwealth, Home Industry and Rotary Clubs, welcome you back to San Francisco,-a great national leader. (Applause.)

In 1910 this city gave you to the State of California. As the Chief Executive of this Commonwealth, you made a record for constructive and humanitarian legislation which has never been equalled in these United States. (Applause.)

In 1916, by an overwhelming vote, we sent you to the greatest forum on earth,-the Senate of the United States. By your ability and courage, upsetting all precedent, you won instant recognition as one of the foremost members of that august body. (Applause.)

Shall the United States become a party to the League of Nations? Two weeks ago tomorrow, on this same spot, the President made a powerful plea to our membership urging the ratification of the Peace Treaty with the Covenant of the League.
