The Hymns which are set forth by authority, and Anthems in the words of Holy Scripture, are allowed to be sung in all Congregations of this Church before and after Morning and Evening Prayer, and also before and after Sermons, at the discretion of the Minister, whose duty it shall be, by standing directions, or from time to time, to appoint such authorized Hymns or Anthems as are to be sung. § 2. It shall be the duty of every Minister of this Church, with such assistance as he may see fit to employ from persons skilled in music, to give order concerning the tunes to be sung at any time in his church; and especially, it shall be his duty to suppress all light and unseemly music, and all indecency and irreverence in the performance, by which vain and ungodly persons profane the service of the sanctuary. Hutchins; Copyright, 1889, by James Pott & Co.; (ii) In preparing a musical edition of the Hymnal set forth by the General Convention of 1892, the editor has sought to keep in mind not only the great variety of occasions and services for which the Hymnal provides, but the equally great variety of tastes, and he might well add needs, of those who will use it. Influenced and guided in his work by these two considerations more than by any other, he hopes that this musical edition of the Hymnal of the Church may be found helpful not only in city parishes having well trained choirs, but in country parishes, and missions and homes; above all, that it may do something towards the increase of congregational singing. The editor would consider it a privilege, did the limits of this preface permit, to mention by name the many clergy, and others, who have aided him with valuable suggestions and contributions. To them all, and to those who have kindly given permission for the use of copyrighted music, he gratefully returns his thanks. And he is under special obligation for advice and critical assistance to Mr. Horatio W. Parker, organist of Trinity Church, Boston, to Mr. Warren A.
