Nearer leaving the cross,
Nearer gaining the crown;
4 But lying darkly between,

Winding down through the night,
Is the deep and unknown stream
To be crossed ere we reach the light.
5 Jesus, perfect my trust,

Strengthen the hand of my faith:
Let me feel Thee near when I stand
On the edge of the shore of death;
6 Feel Thee near when my feet
Are slipping over the brink;
For it may be I'm nearer home,
Nearer now than I think.

AS,

L. M.

when the weary traveller gains The height of some commanding hill, His heart revives, if o'er the plains He sees his home, though distant still; 2 Thus, when the Christian pilgrim views By faith his mansion in the skies, The sight his fainting heart renews,

And wings his speed to reach the prize. 3 The thought of heaven his spirit cheers; No more he grieves for troubles past; Nor any future trial fears,

So he may safe arrive at last.

4 Jesus, on Thee our hopes we stay,
To lead us on to Thine abode;
Assured Thy love will far o'erpay
The hardest labors of the road.

THE

HERE is a land of pure delight,
Where saints immortal reign;

C. M.

Eternal day excludes the night,
And pleasures banish pain.
2 There everlasting spring abides,
And never-fading flowers;
Death, like a narrow sea, divides
This heavenly land from ours.

3 Bright fields beyond the swelling flood
Stand dressed in living green;
So to the Jews fair Canaan stood,
While Jordan rolled between.

4 But timorous mortals start and shrink
To cross the narrow sea;

And linger, trembling on the brink,
And fear to launch away.

5 Oh, could we make our doubts remove,
Those gloomy doubts that rise,
And see the Canaan that we love,
With faith's illumined eyes:

6 Could we but climb where Moses stood,
And view the landscape o'er,

Not Jordan's stream, nor death's cold flood,
Should fright us from the shore.

HERE is a blessed home
Beyond this land of woe,
Where trials never come,
Nor tears of sorrow flow;
Where faith is lost in sight,
And patient hope is crowned,
And everlasting light

Its glory throws around.

2 There is a land of peace:
Good angels know it well;
Glad songs that never cease
Within its portals swell;

6s.

Around its glorious throne
Ten thousand saints adore
Christ, with the Father One,
And Spirit, evermore.

3 Oh, joy all joys beyond,

To see the Lamb Who died,
And count each sacred wound
In hands, and feet, and side!
To give to Him the praise
Of every triumph won,
And sing through endless days
The great things He hath done!

4 Look up, ye saints of God!
Nor fear to tread below
The path your Saviour trod
Of daily toil and woe!
Wait but a little while
In uncomplaining love!
His own most gracious smile
Shall welcome you above.
