18. There shall be an officer, to be denominated Marshal. the Second Marshal, who shall be appointed by, and hold his office during the pleasure of, the Mayor.

19. Before entering upon the duties of his office Marshal, the Second Marshal shall execute a bond to the Corporation, with one or more sureties, to be approved by the Comptroller, in the penal sum of two thousand dollars, conditioned for the faithful performance of the duties of his office.

§ 20. It shall be the duty of the Second Marshal to assist the First Marshal and Chief Clerk in the performance of their duties, and during the absence of either to perform his duties and such other duties as may be required by the Mayor.

§ 21. The Second Marshal shall receive an annual salary of three thousand dollars.*

§ 22.† There shall be an officer in the Mayor's office, to be appointed by the Mayor, who shall be designated as Sergeant-at-Arms, and receive a salary of fifteen hundred dollars per year.

TO FIX THE SALARIES OF THE MAYOR, COMPTROLLER,
STREET COMMISSIONER, DEPUTY STREET COMMIS-
SIONER, AND CITY INSPECTOR, AND THE OFFICERS
AND CLERKS IN THE MAYOR'S OFFICE, DURING

THE SUSPENSION OF SPECIE PAYMENT.

Be it ordained by the Mayor, Aldermen, and Com-
monalty of the city of New York, in Common
Council convened :

SECTION 1. Section three of article one, and sections

eight, ten, eleven, and twelve of article two, and sections seventeen and twenty-one of article three of chapter one of the Revised Ordinances, approved by the Mayor, June 20, 1859; and section four, chapter three, article two, and section five, chapter seven, article eleven, and ordinances amendatory thereof, are hereby amended, so that the salaries to be paid to the Mayor and the officers and clerks in the Mayor's office, during the present suspension of specie payment by the banks in the city of New York, shall be as follows:

The Mayor and Comptroller, Street Commissioner, Deputy Street Commissioner, and City Inspector shall receive an annual salary of seven thousand five hundred dollars.

The Chief Clerk shall receive an annual salary of three thousand five hundred dollars.

The First Assistant Clerk shall receive an annual salary of three thousand five hundred dollars.

The Second Assistant Clerk shall receive an annual salary of three thousand dollars.

The Third Assistant Clerk shall receive an annual salary of two thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars.

The Fourth Assistant Clerk shall receive an annual salary of two thousand five hundred dollars.

The First Marshal shall receive an annual salary of three thousand five hundred dollars.

The Second Marshal shall receive an annual salary of three thousand dollars.

The Interpreter shall receive an annual salary of one thousand five hundred dollars.

The Record Clerk shall receive an annual salary of two thousand dollars.

The Copying Clerk shall receive an annual salary of one thousand five hundred dollars.

The Messenger shall receive an annual salary of one thousand five hundred dollars.

And the Assistant Messenger shall receive the sum of one thousand two hundred and fifty dollars per

annum.

The salary of the Health Commissioner shall be four thousand dollars per annum ; and the Resident Physician shall receive an annual salary of twenty-five hundred dollars.

SEC. 2. The salaries of the Mayor, officers, and clerks, mentioned in the foregoing section, shall date, as therein increased, to take effect from January 1, 1864, and continue as established by this ordinance until the banks in the city of New York shall resume specie payment, at which time this ordinance shall become inoperative, and, unless otherwise ordered by the Common Council, shall then and thereafter be paid at the respective amount of salary attached to said offices by ordinance existing previously to the adoption hereof.

SEC. 3. All ordinances and parts of ordinances inconsistent or conflicting with this ordinance are hereby repealed.

SEC. 4. This ordinance shall take effect immediately. (Approved by the Mayor, December 31, 1864.)

NOTE. The salaries of the officers mentioned in the foregoing ordinance were as follows at the date of its passage:

Mayor, $5,000, by revised ordinances of 1859.

Comptroller, $5,000, by revised ordinances of 1859.

Street Commissioner, $5,000, by resolution of December 17, 1857. Deputy Street Commissioner, $5,000, by resolution of January 3, 1863. Chief Clerk, $2,500, by ordinance of November 25, 1863.

First Assistant Clerk, $2,500, by ordinance of November 25, 1863.
