" The want of an asylum for the insane poor often occasions painful embarrassments to the courts when the defense in the criminal charge is insanity fully sustained by proof. Although the jury may certify that their acquittal is on that ground, and thus empower the court to order the prisoner into close custody, yet that custody can be in no other place than the common prisons,— places illy qualified for such a subject of incarceration.
