And why should not we also do the same? For God gives us health and joy, and grants us many good things to eat and drink, and wear, that we may feel well, and be glad. In a good and just sense of all these things, we should love and thank him, and try to serve and please him. For what he is, and for all he does, we should bless and praise his great name. "He is good, and does good." His works show him to be wise, and , strong, and great. As these tell much of him, so all good folks love to search them out, and learn from them all they can of their God and Judge, whom they love with all their heart, and whom they serve in good will and truth; for they know that he sees them, and looks on their hearts. God sees us by day and by night. He sees us when we do wrong, and always sees us. He knows all we think and all we say.

Let no lies go out of our lips, nor bad deeds from our hands; for this would not please him who gives us all we have, and can take from us all the good things that are with us now, and all the joys which we can hope for in time to come.

Love all men as you do love your own self; and do to them as you would have them do to you.

Peace is a great good for men in this world. The Son of God, who spake as man never speaks, and who taught as one that had come from the Most High, tells us that he who makes peace is blest, and is a child of God. He says to those that love him, and have faith in him, "My peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you." Let all do right, and they will have peace-peace with God, peace with all good and wise men, and peace with their own sense of right and wrong. And now my dear ones, who read this-peace be with you all A men.

LESSON 6-VI.

Duties of Parents and Children.

You, my dear chil-dren, are made by God crea-tures of rea-son and of grad-u-al ed-u-cation, and not like the birds and bees, crea-tures of mere in-stinct. On this ac-count God has, in great kind-ness, provided for you, in your own dear pa-rents, and their cho-sen assist ants, such guides, ru-lers, teach-ers, and gen-er-al ed-u-ca-tors, as you need. On this ac count, God has, in the Bi-ble, taught both pa-rents and children their re-la-tions and du-ties to each oth er, as fol-lows:

These words which I com-mand thee this day shall be in thy heart, and thou shalt teach them dil-i-gent-ly un-to thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sit-test in thy house, and when thou walk-est by the way, and when thou li est down, and when thou ris-est up. He es-tab-lished a tes-ti-mony in Ja-cob, and ap. point-ed a law in Is-ra-el, which he com-mand-ed our fa-thers, that they should make them known unto their chil-dren; that the gen-er-a-tion to come might know them, e-ven the chil-dren that should be born; who should a rise and de-clare them to their chil-dren; that they might set their hope in God, and not for-get the works of God; but keep his com-mand-ments.-Train up a child in the way he should go. Bring ing them np in the nur-ture and ad-mo-ni-tion of the Lord. Fool ish-ness is bound up in the heart of a child; but the rod of cor-rec-tion shall drive it far from him. He that spar-eth the rod hat-eth his son; but he that loveth him, chas-ten-eth him be-times. The rod and reproof give wis-dom; but a child left to him-self, bringeth his mother to shame. Cor-rect thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his cry-ing. With. hold not cor-rec-tion from the child'; for if thou beat

him with the rod, he shall not die.. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt save his soul from hell. Cor-rect thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give de-light un-to thy soul. If ye en-dure chas-ten-ing, God deal-eth with you as with sons; for what son is there whom the fa.ther chas-ten-eth not. Now, no chas-ten-ing seem-eth for the pres-ent to be joy-ous, but grievous; nev-er-the-less, af-ter-wards, it yield-eth the peace-a-ble fruit of right-eous-ness un-to them which are ex-er-cis-ed there-by.And the Lord, said, shall I hide from A-bram the thing which I do? [the o-ver-throw of Sod-om and Go-mor-rah, Ad-mah and Zeboim, for their great wick-ed-ness ;] for I know him, that he will com-mand his chil-dren and his house-hold after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord.

The du ties of children.-Thou shalt hon-or thy fa ther and thy mo-ther, that thy days may be long up-on the land.--Curs-ed be he that set-teth light by his father or his mo-ther; and all the peo-ple shall say, A-men. Thou shalt rise up be-fore the hoar-y head, and hon-or the face of the old man.--And he [E-li-sha] went up un-to Beth-el; and as he was going up by the way, there came forth lit-tle chil-dren out of the city, and mock-ed him, and said un-to him, "Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head." And he turn-ed back and look-ed on them, and curs-ed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood and tare for-ty and two chil-dren of them. Come, ye children, heark-en un-to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. What man [or per-son] is there, that de-sir-eth life, and lov-eth ma-ny days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from e-vil, and thy lips from speak-ing guile, [or de-ceit, or lies.] De-part from e-vil and do good. Seek peace

C

and pur-sue it. The eyes of the Lord are up-on the right-eous, and his ears are o-pen un-to their cry. The face of the Lord is a-gainst them that do e-vil, to cut off the re-mem-brance of them from the earth. The son hon or-eth his father. If I be a fa-ther, (saith God,) where is my hon-or? Chil-dren, o bey your parents in the Lord; for this is right. Hon-or thy father and thy mo-ther, that it may be well with thee. Remem-ber now thy Cre-a-tor in the days of thy youth; while the e-vil days come not.-O sat-is-fy us ear-ly with thy mer-cy, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. They that seek me early [saith Wisdom] shall find me. With my spirit with in me will I seek thee [God] early. Suf-fer lit-tle chil-dren [said the Lord Je-sus] to come un-to me.-Lit-tle children in the temple cri ed Ho san na to the Son of Da vid! [Christ.]

In the Bi-ble we have ac-count of ma-ny who ear-ly be-came the pi-ous, faith-ful, and de-vo-ted ser-vants of God. A-mong these were A-bel, and E-noch, and I-saac, and Jo-seph, and Mo-ses, and Josh-u-a, and Ca-leb, and Sam-u-el, and Da-vid, and Jo.si-ah, and O-be-di-ah, and Dan-i-el, and John, and Tim-o-thy. I will, by-and-by, tell you of some of these. But, as soon as you can, you must look them all up in the Bible, and read all that is there said a-bout them. Tim-o-thy it is af-firm-ed, that from a child he knew the holy scrip-tures, which were able to make him (and, of course, you al-so) wise un-to sal-va-tion, through faith in our Lord Je-sus Christ. Now let all which is in this lesson be so-ber-ly and thor-ough-ly con-sid-er-ed by all its read-ers, wheth-er pa-rents or chil-dren.

LESSON 7-VII.

Wisdom.

DEFINITION. It consists in finding out those things which are, on the whole, best for creatures of our nature and condition, and in earnestly pursuing them.

BIBLE EXTRACTS.-The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; the beginning of wisdom. The Lord giveth wisdom. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous. When wisdom entereth into thy heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; discretion shall preserve thee; understanding shall keep thee, to deliver thee from the way of the evil man; to deliver thee from the strange woman, from the stranger that flattereth with her mouth; who forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God.

Her

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding; for the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof, than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies, and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. Length of days is in her right hand, and in her left hand riches and honor. ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold on her, and happy is every one that retaineth her. Get wisdom; forget it not; neither decline from the words of her mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee; love her, and she shall keep thee. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom, and with all thy getting, get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee; she shall bring thee to honor, when thou dost embrace her. She shall give
