FEBRUARY 26, 1730.

GENTLEMEN,

Have hitherto read your weekly labours with pleasure : but give me leave to fay, your hottentot performance was fuch a naufeous piece of ftupidity, that, if you don't fpeedily retrieve your honour, I fhall wifh fome of you to be the happy bridegrooms at the CAPE OF GOOD HOPE; and can't now forbear expreffing my female indignation, by prefenting you with the following lines, as my prefent fentiments of your finking fociety, which, if you dare, you may print in your next.

L

Yours, BELINDA,

ONG have I thought your club to be
A batchelor fociety;

A tett of lively brilliant wits:

But now 'tis plain, you're marry'd cits,

Your

Your fprightly joys feem paft the full;
Juft on the point of growing dull.
You have your felves fo much be-pifs'd,
From off the stage you'll foon be hifs'd;
Or may I ne'er by man be kiss'd.

On a Beautiful LADY who was Blind

ΤΗ

}

HO' beauteous MIRA heav'n deprives of fight, To view those charms, which give the world delight; Let not her heart, opprefs'd with grief, complain: Had the beheld her form, fhe had been vain. One fenfe in pure compaffion heaven denies; And to fecure her virtue, dims her eyes.

The CITY LADIES and COUNTRY LASS. The Words by Mr. LOCKMAN; and afterwards fet to Mufic by Dr. PEPUSCH.

T

Hrice happy Lizzy, blooming maid!
By no falfe arts of life betray'd;

Bleft tenant of the rural scene,

(Whofe joy's unmix'd with pining care
Which preys upon the modish Fair)

When ev'ning comes, with artless fmile,
Does all her pleafing toils beguile

With tripping o'er th' enamell'd green.

CLARINDA fair, in jewels dreft,
The pride of theatres confeft,
Still fhines with irrefiftlefs mein
Tho' mufic, action, words confpire,
To wake her foul to foft defire,

Delight like this, will quickly cloy;
And Lizzy taftes more perfect joy,

In tripping o'er th'enamell'd green.

When

When LINDAMIRA in the dance
To fprightly airs does fwift advance,
And graceful moves like beauty's Queen ;
Tho' crouds of Beaux admiring gaze,
Nor fick'ning Prudes refufe her praise,
The flatter'd belle's not half fo bleft;
And Lizzy's of more joys poffeft,
In tripping o'er th' enamell'd green.

When COQUETILLA cards invite
To while away the social night,
And banish far corroding spleen:
Tho' chance, indulgent to her will,
Conveys each circling deal, fpadille;
The fweets of gain are lefs refin'd,
And fofter transports footh the mind
Of Lizzy, when the trips the green.

Hail blifsful life which Lizzy leads,
Midft bubbling fprings and painted meads,
Juft emblem of the golden mean:
A life with fairest virtue grac'd,
Whofe ebbing moments fweetly wafte;
Made doubly joyous, chearful, gay,
When LIZZY crowns th' indulgent day,
With tripping o'er th' enamell'd green.

Upon WIT.

RUE wit is like the brilliant stone
Dug from the INDIAN mine;

Which boasts two various powers in one,
To cut as well as shine.

Genius like that, if polifh'd right,
With the fame gifts abounds;

Appears at once both keen and bright,
And fparkles while it wounds.

The following Letter I receiv'd fome time ago from BURTON in STAFFORDSHIRE.

OUR old friend JMS

Yo

having purchafed

upon

an estate in this neighbourhood, lives now amongst us, and is fo kind as to make very pretty copies of verses perfons and fubjects that occur hereabouts. I now fend you fome verfes which he repeated the other day at an entertainment made on account of the birth-day of the young Lord ANDOVER, fon to the earl of BERKSHIRE.

[ocr errors]

ANDOVER! with foft attraction gay;
Where early graces and young
mufes play:
Think, whilft we celebrate thy natal hour,
We toaft to freedom unreftrain'd by pow'r :
That plan of liberty deliver'd down,

Which the fire cherish'd, and the fon must own.
Then, when on noble ruins thou fhalt rise,

And the bad world yields BERKSHIRE to the skies;
Long may'ft thou emulate thy father's place,
And wear the beauties of thy mother's race.

The WATERMAN'S Reply to the DOCTER'S ANSWER, printed in the CRAFTSMAN of SATURDAY laft.

HE waterman thus to the doctor reply'd,

tod, been ally'd,

And we too, like you, love to go with the tide.
In another point likewise this truth you'll discover,
That we fafely may venture to call you our brother:
For whilft you look'd one way, you row'd quite another.

To Mrs. M. H.

HEN firft, MARILLA, on thy charms I gaz'd, From those bright eyes what rays of glory blaz'd! Lightning, 'tis faid (fo fubtile is the fire)

Will melt the fword, and leave the sheath entire.
Such was my fate - - - I view'd me all around;
No fcar directed to th' internal wound.
Hurt fure I was: I felt the tingling smart
Through paths unfeen invade my melting heart.
On that the lightning of thine eyes did play,
"Till by their beams 'twas quite diffolv'd away.

On Mr. JAMES MOORE's pretty Verfes on the Birth-day of the LORD ANDOVER,printed in our laft Journal.

HAT makes for once, fquire JEMMY'S mufe fo toward?

WHAT

Mere joy to fee a coufin of NED HOWARD.
