REDDALL, In the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Columbia. PREFACE. THE importance of a compilation which should combine a simple arrangement of the laws of the United States relative to Naturalization, Emigrants and Emigrant vessels, with the statutes of the several States touching the importation of paupers, convicts, &c., has induced the compilers to prepare the present volume, to which they have devoted the occasional hours not required by their public duties. In addition to the above-named subjects will be found much valuable matter pertaining to the privileges and liabilities of citizens, both native and alien, and all the extradition treaties now in force. The compilers have aimed to make it a useful book of reference to all classes of the community, particularly to such persons as design to become citizens, to Merchants, to Ship-masters engaged in transporting emigrants from the old world-who are often unaware of their legal responsibilities in carrying passengers and to officers of the Government at home and abroad. The matter introduced has been collected and compared with care, and the volume is put forth under the sanction and approbation of the honorable Secretary of State. WASHINGTON, D. C. INDEX.
