A JOURNAL FOR THE PROGRESSIVE TEACHER.

From time to time we receive unsigned letters asking us to answer certain questions through the

Anonymous Letters. columns of THE INLAND EDUCATOR. We believe nearly all papers make it an invariable rule to recognize no communications that are unsigned. We have, therefore, good warrant for doing likewise, though we usually place such letters aside for the reason that the points raised are not of sufficient general interest. Let us promise that we shall answer all questions, so far as we are able, either by letter or through THE EDUCATOR, provided always that name and address are given.

elsewhere, and the school established four years ago at Winona has well justified the hopes of its promoters. This school is unique in that it is organized upon the university idea. Heads of departments from several of the universities and colleges in the middle west have formed a federation and together they conduct the school. There are men and women of national reputation on the faculty, and all are teachers of experience and ability. The scope of the courses of study is broad enough to accomodate all, and it is refreshing to find that denominational and political differences have disappeared in the organization. The work offered appears to be particularly well adapted to the needs of teachers, though as Pro

fessor Millis, dean of the school, says, it is not for the making of teachers so much as for the remaking of those who need a fresh professional breath. These attempts to bring university and teacher together in places "near to nature's heart" seem to solve the double problem of summer study and a summer outing.

It appears that the politicians are in power and according to reports they have not scrupled to use their official positions for personal ends. We agree with all that has been said in condemnation of such methods in general and of this case in particular, the circumstances of which have been too widely reported to need repetition, but we wish to express one thing more; that is the hope that instead of retiring, under fire, so to speak, Superintendent Search may change his purpose to resign and stay on the ground, if possible, and in the name of common honesty demand justice and a cleansing. He can not do it alone, of course, but it is inconceivable that a majority—a large majority-of the citizens of Holyoke would not rally to his support if the charges of corruption against the board are shown to be true. In a free country the people can have what they want if they earnestly set about it. That any considerable number of the population of Holyoke desire to uphold a corrupt board of politicians as an apology for a board of education seems incredible. Apathy in a case
