presentation to the Grand Lodge a portrait of their retiring chief, but through me, whom they have honored with the commission to be their spokesman, they ask you, Most Worshipful Sir, to accept this life-like portrait of their brightest jewel for the adornment of the walls of our temple of fame.

The portrait was received on behalf of Grand Lodge by M... W.. CHARLES W. MEAD, Grand Master, as follows:

M.. W.. Brother Sutherland:

The eloquent and deserved tribute you have just paid to M... W... WRIGHT D. POWNALL finds an echoing response in the heart of every Brother in this Grand Lodge and in the Craft.

They yield a glad and instant endorsement to every form of speech and to every coinage into words of those sentiments of high and enduring regard, of pure and fraternal affection for him, which find their expression in the smile of sincere gladness, the word of cordial welcome, and the hand-clasp of unfeigned pleasure that meet him and greet him wherever he may go.

It needed not the painter's art to perpetuate to those of this Masonic generation the lineaments of the face of M.. W... BROTHER POWNALL. In the hearts of all who have come within the sphere of his influence or the charm of his presence; who have noted the lofty purpose which animated and controlled him in an administration brilliant in its achievements, accomplished in its successes, and memorable, indeed, for its concord-an administration all too quickly ended -his face and form will ever abide in memory's treasure-halls.

But to those who shall come after us, who shall linger with delight over the rich heritage wrought by him in heart and brain under the highest incentive that can inspire noblest effort-the welfare of the Fraternity-there will come the desire to look upon the pictured face of that Grand Master whose reign was begun in peace and continued in concord to the lasting good of the Craft.

It is most befitting and most praiseworthy that his brethren of Chancellor Walworth Lodge, where for him the command was given, "Let there be light," who knew him so well, and, knowing him so well, love him so much, should have transfused into the artist's soul such measure of their knowledge of the man and his spirit and character that, through the faithful portraiture here presented, behind and beyond the painted canvas, we see the purity of heart and nobility of soul of M... W.. WRIGHT D. POWNALL.

Graciously receive, M.. W.. Sir, and bear to the generous brethren of Chancellor Walworth Lodge, our warm and fraternal thanks for their beautiful gift, and our assurances that this matchless portrait of their matchless Brother shall find a continual abiding-place in that galaxy of distinguished Craftsmen who have gone before him, whose labors, like his, have inured to the welfare of the Craft and to the enduring fame of Freemasonry.

On motion, R.. W.. BYRON J. STROUGH and R.. W.. FREDERICK P. MORRIS were elected Trustees of the Masonic Hall and Asylum Fund, by acclamation, each for a term of three years, in accordance with the nominations of M.. W.. WRIGHT D. POWNALL.
