judgment. Wisdom is better than strength; wisdom is better than weapons of war; the words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools. Who is as the wise man and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed. [Eccl. viii. & ix. 1, 5, 6, 16, 17, 18. Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! [Isai. v. 21.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and the knowledge of the Holy is understanding: for by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased. If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it. [Prov. ix. 10-12.

The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. [James, iii. 17.

Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect; yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought; but we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory; which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. [1 Cor. ii. 6-8.

Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold. For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it. I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions. Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom. I am understanding; I have strength. By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth. I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me. Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness. My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver. I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment; that I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures. The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his

When there was no depths, I was brought forth; when there was no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled; before the hills was I brought forth while as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. When he prepared the heavens, I was there when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: when he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep when he gave to the sea his de. cree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: then I was by him, as one brought up with him and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him; rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men. Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the Lord. [Prov. viii. 10-35.

WIVES.

Who can find a virtuous woman for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good, and not evil, all the days of her life. She seeketh wool and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clo. thing is silk and purple. Her husband is known in the

gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates. [Prov. xxxi. 10-31.

A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones. [Prov. xii. 4.

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the Church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the Church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. [Ephes. v. 22-24.

I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. [1 Tim. v. 14. Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement. [Matth. v. 31. If he take him another wife; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish.

[Exod. xxi. 10.

Let thy fountain be blessed and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love. [Prov. v. 18, 19. [See Marriage.]

WORKS (GOOD-BAD).

I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.

[Ps. ci. 3. [Phil. iii. 2.

Beware of evil workers. The wicked worketh a deceitful work; but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.

[Prov. xi. 18.

For God shall bring every work into judgement, with every secret thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil.

Every man's work shall be made shall declare it.

If counsel or work be of men it will

[Acts. v. 38. by works faith is [James. ii. 20, 22.

Faith without works is dead, but made perfect. Glory, honour and peace to every man that worketh good. [Rom ii. 10.

Let every man prove his own work, and then he shall have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another; for every man shall bear his own burthen. [Gal. vi. 4, 5. God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love which ye have showed toward his name.

[Heb. vi. 10. I will give unto every one of you according to your works: he that overcometh and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations.

[Rev. ii. 23, 26.

I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. [Rev. xx. 12, 13.

WORLDLINESS.

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

[Matth. vi. 19-21. No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. [Matth. vi. 24.

They that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. [Rom. viii. 5-8. If ye live after the flesh, ye shall die; but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. [Rom. viii. 13, 14.

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God. [Rom. xii. 1, 2.

WORSHIP (GOD's).

God, that made the world, and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; neither is he worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; and hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; that they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us; for in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, for we are also his offspring. Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. [Acts, xvii. 24-29.

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. [John, iv. 24.
