prophet; and an angel spoke to me, saying, Bring him back with thee to thine house, that he may eat bread, and drink water.'"

The prophet from Judah listened to the old man's words and went back with him, and did eat bread and drink water in his house. And the Lord was angry at his disobedience; and even while they sat at the table, he told the old man to speak to the prophet from Judah and say, "Because thou hast disobeyed the Lord and come back to Bethel, and have eaten bread and drunk water there, thou shalt not, when thou art dead, be buried in thy father's sepulchre!"

Then the prophet started to go back to the land of Judah again. But on the road a lion met him and slew him, and his dead body lay in the road, while the ass on which he had ridden, and the lion also, stood by it. Some

men passing that way saw the lion and the ass standing by it. They came and told it in Bethel where the old prophet lived. "It is the prophet from Judah," he cried, who disobeyed the command of the Lord. Therefore the Lord has given him to the lion, which has slain him, so that he may not be buried in the sepulchre of his fathers."

Then the old man

said to his sons,

Saddle the ass for me." And he went to the place where the prophet had been slain, and found his dead body lying by the roadside the ass and the lion standing by it. The old man took up the prophet's dead body and laid it upon the ass, and brought it to Bethel, and buried it in his own field. Then he said to his sons, "When I am dead, bury me in the sepulchre where the prophet of Judah is buried, and lay my bones beside his

bones; for the words that he spoke against the altar in Bethel shall surely come true."

At this time the son of King Jeroboam grew sick; and Jeroboam said to his wife, "Put on other raiment, that no one may know thee, and go to Shiloh, to the prophet who told me I should be king. Take him a present of ten loaves of bread and a cruse of honey, and he will tell thee if this child shall get well." Jeroboam's wife put on other raiment and went to Shiloh, and came to the prophet's house. Now, the prophet was old and could not see, for his eyes were dim. But the Lord had told him that the wife of Jeroboam was coming to ask about her son; and so when he heard the sound of her feet, as she came in at the door, he said, "Come in, thou wife of Jeroboam. Alas, I have to tell thee sad tidings, Go, say to Jeroboam, the

Lord has spoken and said, 'Behold, I raised thee up from from among the people, and made thee king over ten tribes of Israel; I took those ten tribes away from Solomon's son and gave them to thee. Yet thou hast not obeyed my commandments, but hast, instead, done most wickedly, for thou hast turned away from serving Me and made other gods. Therefore will I send evil upon thee and thy family, until not one of them shall be left alive. And even when they are dead, they shall not be buried in the grave, as the families of other kings are buried: but those that die in the city the dogs shall eat, and those that die out in the field the birds of the air shall eat.' As the Lord hath said, so shall it be. Go back, therefore, to thy house, and before thou shalt come to it thy child shall have died. Let all the people mourn for him
