IV. There be only two facraments ordained by Christ our Lord in the gospel, that is to fay, baptifm and the supper of the Lord: neither of which may be difpenfed by any but by a minister of the word lawfully ordained k.

V. The facraments of the Old Teftament, in regard of the spiritual things thereby fignified and exhibited, were, for fubftance, the fame with thofe of the New 7.

CHAP. XXVIII. Of Baptifm.

APTISM is a facrament of the New Teftament, ordained by Jefus Chrift a, not only for the folemn admiffion

whereunto, even baptifm, doth alfo now fave us, (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the aniwer of a good confcience towards God) by the refurrection of Jefus Chrift.

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance; but he that cometh after me, is mightier than I, whofe fhoes I am not worthy to bear: he fhall baptize you with the holy Ghost, and with fire. 1 Cor. xii. 13. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

IV. Not only those that do actually profess faith in and obedience unto Chrift, but alfo the infants of one or both believing parents, are to be baptized m.

V. Although it be a great fin to contemn or neglect this ordinancen, yet grace and falvation are not so infeparably annexed unto it, as that no perfon can be regenerated or faveḍ without ito, or that all that are baptized are undoubtedly regenerated p.

VI. The efficacy of baptifm is not tied to that moment of time wherein it is adminiftredq; yet notwithstanding, by the right ufe of this ordinance, the grace promised is not only offered, but really exhibited and conferred by the holy Ghoit, to fuch (whether of age or infants) as that grace belongeth

CHAP. XXIX. Of the Lord's Supper.

UR Lord Jefus, in the night wherein he was betrayed, instituted the facrament of his body and blood, called the Lord's Supper, to be observed in his church unto the end of the world, for the perpetual remembrance of the facrifice of himself in his death, the fealing all benefits thereof unto true believers, their spiritual nourishment and growth in him, their farther engagement in and to all duties which they owe unto him and to be a bond and pledge of their communion with him, and with each other, as members of his mystical body a.

bloweth where it lifteth, and thou heareft the found thereof, but canft not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: fo is every one that is born of the Spirit.
