PREFACE

THE Editor of this little work designed not merely that candidates for the senior department of the Oxford Middle Class Examinations should be assisted in acquiring a proper knowledge of one of the subjects specified in the Examination Scheme of the year 1860, but also that schools might be supplied with a textbook, adapted generally to prepare the minds of youth for appreciating, interpreting, and describing the productions of English prose literature.

It is believed by many that Johnson's Rasselas, on account of its peculiar rhythm, may, as a readingbook in schools, prove an excellent means of promoting that deliberate and expressive elocution which teachers often find it so difficult to make their pupils acquire. While Rasselas, therefore, is here offered and recommended for that purpose, an endeavour has been made to render this edition subservient to other school purposes; each chapter being preceded by ety
