(In Marshall County.)

Rev. F. E. Irwin: "This meeting brings before me the weakness of my character and the foolishness in my preaching. Thank God for this light."

Rev. James Griffin: "I've been discouraged by the bad life of so many of our leaders."

The Teacher: "The weakness and pollution of heathenism and slavery are hard to break from. Israel was long afflicted by the sins of Egypt. And where it is the duty of two lamps to light up a dark room and one of them has gone out, the burning lamp is put on 'double duty.' Don't you be discouraged, but prepare to do double duty as a pure and holy man. If the people may not have two good men, do let them have one. Words, far too often, are uttered only by the mouth, while character is an expression of the heart."

Rev. Mr. Maston: "I see that the reason why we preachers make so much noise is because we know so little to say-we are not filled with the knowledge of the truth and so we try to make it up by mournful sounds. I am going to study more hereafter, and try to draw out my powers."

(At Collinsville.)

Rev. Jas. Stevens: "How can we be perfect in character so long as information is so scarce? We have plenty of feeling, but feeling does not give light. The people

need lessons, they perish for the want of teaching. At last the school has come to us, and we have hopes of better things."

I could give other testimony equally valuable, but this will suffice.

Closing, it is proper to say that the Institute is not the only occasion for doing good. We meet individuals from house to house, church conferences, pastors' conferences, Associations and Sunday-school conventions, primary schools and high schools, and in all cases and on all occasions we strive to pour the light upon the darkness around our pathway. We attack and expose all forms of error and sin, ever speaking the truth in love. And everywhere we hear: "How we wish this had started sooner!" Yours in gospel bonds,

C. O. BOOTHE.

Dear Bro.:-It has been a long time since we have heard from you, but I trust you do not forget us. The Lord has been very good to us during this long, hot summer. The heat came earlier than usual. We have had only one shower since May. The true state of things one cannot understand without seeing it. Such dust, so deep, can never be imagined. The fields are all parched. Many forest trees have died. Some of the finest oak trees on these grounds are dead. For over six weeks the thermometer has not been lower than 102 in heat of the day, and at times has reached 110 in our rooms. For some weeks it was not lower than 92 at night and early morning. The past ten days two or three showers have passed near us and cooled the air a little, so that for a little time in the mornings it has been down to So, and we feel a little rest. During all this the Lord has very wonderfully kept us. Miss Dysart has had some chills and been under doctor's care all summer, but has been able to keep about and do considerable work. I have been well as usual until the last few days, and I went to the doctor this morning.

Our work has kept up with encouraging interest and results. Three of the children have been converted; great changes are seen in the older people. There never was a lower, more needy people than those we reach by this little mission chapel. The only trouble is that the room is so small

it cannot hold the people. We divided our industrial school, having the boys one day and the girls another, and yet we had to put some of them to sit out on the steps and in the yard. That did very well while at work, but was not well when we taught the Bible lesson. At last, when so hot, the crowd in the small room was so sickening, I was obliged to close that school until cooler. The Sunday-school is very full, but we had it in early morning, and the night meeting was more endurable when the blaze of the sun was not upon us. On the whole, I think our work was never more blessed during any summer. This dry weather the brick buildings have been cracking more than ever before. It will make Mr. Wolverton heartsick when he sees the new building. The walls of this old building are dreadful. I had the mason

Mr. Wolverton employs and who lives near to come and look at this. He says all depends upon which way these walls move when it rains. If the rain causes the earth to move some ways, the walls may right themselves some. If, on the other hand, the earth moves the other way, these walls will go down. The plastering is falling badly, and we are not safe from it.

I wrote Mr. Wolverton, asking if he did not think he could just put us up a rough, unfinished, temporary building for next ses sion, but he does not say. I do not want to complain to our Chicago Board. I am sure I would be content with very poor buildings.

To those who have been away for four months' vacation in pleasant homes the return to work here might seem different. But to us who have no other home, I must confess it sometimes seems as if it was impossible to think of going through another school session in this uncomfortable way, and what hurts still more is the fact that we pretend to teach these women neat and orderly homekeeping. And yet we are so crowded and have so little to do with, that many of the better class of women who come to us think it is not fit for people to live like this. I know if Mr. could see our need it would not take him ten min. utes to decide that he would have a share in this work in Texas. I wish the Atlanta sisters, or someone who can get his ear, would tell him our need.

The Lord has given us a place among the ladies of the white Baptist church here this summer. Many of them are friendly and are praying for us now.

I hope you have had a pleasant rest, and will be refreshed and able to continue your work many years.

No doubt Dr. Garnett or others have told you that A. R. Griggs has been appointed to go out over Texas and raise the indebtedness of Hearne and Houston Academy. With trust and thanksgiving to God,

Dear Bro. :-The long anticipated dedication day has come and gone. The Lord was with us. His spirit touched the hearts of the people. As they looked upon the beautiful house of worship, more than 600 representative people of this goodly city, they praised it without criticism and quickly responded with pledges to the amount of $1,000 to provide for unpaid bills and for the pews. The total cost of the building is $4,000; of one lot and furnishing, $1,000; total, $5,000. Such a building probably could not now be erected for less than $5,000 all admit. We have been greatly favored in buying material low and in securing first-class labor also reasonable. The Society may be proud that they have assisted in putting at the Capital of Oklahoma the finest edifice of any denomination in either territory (Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory), and have not been wasteful of precious funds. Brethren Rairden and Dyke were present with us. The former preached in the morning, the latter spoke with other brethren in the evening. Other churches of the city joined in our services. We have the praise and confidence of the community.

Dear Bro. :-When in my first pastorate in New Sweden, Maine, we built a church, with seating capacity for 400, at a cost of $4,000. More than $3,000 was raised inside of the church in less than two years. One of the brethren, a farmer, sold his oxen and turned the money into the church treasury, and another family, who were about to build a better house for themselves, concluded to stay in the old one and give some of the money towards building a house for the Lord Jesus. My experience among our people here is somewhat the same story. When we took the subscription for our building fund a poor widow, a washing woman, said, "I give $10 by God's help." I was not a little astonished when, the other day, she handed in $9 to be credited on her pledge, and when from some other source I learned that she hardly has bread enough I felt as though I would like to hand the money back to her, and my eyes were filled with tears.

BOOK NOTICES.

SHADOW AND SUBSTANCE. By Rev. Geo. C. Needham. 12mo, 199 pp. Price, 75 cents. American Baptist Publication Society, 1632 Chestnut street, Philadelphia.

This book is a suggestive study of a portion of the Word of God too often neglected. The exposition is clear, and faithful in its witness to the fundamental truths regarding the redemptive work of Christ, as set forth typically in the Tabernacle and its services, but the material does not seem to have been thoroughly digested, and reads too much like a running commentary on the passages of Scripture which it expounds. The value of the book would have been greatly enhanced by a more thorough and painstaking treatment of its important theme.

We wish to say again in regard to the Sundayschool helps of the Publication Society, that they are as good as any with which we are acquainted, and the best for all Baptist Sunday-schools; which is to say, that they ought to be in all our Baptist Sundayschools throughout the land.

MOAB-BALAK'S PETITION. By Rev. G. P. Mitchell. 16m0, 24 pp. Price, 5 cents.

KEEP SUNDAY. By Henry F. Colby, D.D. 16m0, 32 pp. Price, 5 cents.

THE FIRST TEXT BOOK IN COMPARATIVE RELIGION. By William Ashmore, D.D. 16m0, 32 pp. Price, 5 cents.

THE TEACHING OF CHRIST CONCERNING THE FUTURE LIFE. By Rev. C. H. Pendleton. 16m0, 31 pp. Price, 5 cents. These pamphlets, published by the American Baptist Publication Society, 1632 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, are attractive in form, and timely in treatment of their important themes. Should be widely read.
