PREFACE

THIS book has grown up in connection with the compiler's classes, especially with his principal course in the philosophy of education. With this origin its chief function has been to supplement otherwise available reading resources, especially by rendering many short and inaccessible references easy of access. While many topics have thus been treated with perhaps satisfactory fullness, others will call for additional reading in the easily accessible books treating of educational and social theory. The author's Syllabus in the Philosophy of Education (Teachers College Bureau of Publications) will furnish specific references to such additional material as is used by the author with his classes. As is to be expected from a book so made, the quotations here presented furnish definite material in the philosophy of education for studying the topics discussed in the author's classes especially from the point of view held by the author. But the selection of quotations is by no means limited to this point of view. On the contrary care has been taken to present all sorts of opposed views and positions, the chief criteria for inclusion being pertinence and clearness with brevity of statement. The beginner in the subject is accordingly warned to be on his guard and think before he accepts. Indeed a primary intent has been that the student be forced to think in order to accept.

For courteous permission to use material the compiler hereby expresses his grateful appreciation not only to the several owners of the copyrights giving such permission, but also to many others of whom it was not legally necessary to get this permission. The chief indebtedness here is to Professor John Dewey. The asterisk (*) found in the body of the work in connection with the source of any selection is used to indicate copyright material for which the owner of the copyright has given permission of reproduction. Specific reference to author and publisher is given not only in connection with each selection quoted, but also in an author index of sources to be found at the close of the book (pp. 341-349). Pains have been taken to refer every quotation to its original source and to locate it there precisely either by edition and page
