ernment, the Korean officials assassinated Prince Hirobumi Ito in October, 1909, who was at that time President of the Privy Council in Japan, and at one time a Resident General of Korea. In the previous year (March, 1908) Mr. Durham White Stevens, the American Councilor to the Korean Government was brutally murdered. These and many other nefarious plots on the part of the Koreans, compelled Japan to take stronger measures, finally ending in the formal annexation, August 22, 1910.

The real work of regeneration was then started. The Mikado pardoned 1800 criminals, granted nearly nine million dollars to the smaller municipilaties, gave several mil

lions of dollars to the old aristocracy who had lost their source of revenue, established thirtyfive training industrial schools, thirteen industrial workshops and several hundred primary schools. There are twelve hundred of the latter in Korea today. To the royal family and heirs to the throne, the Japanese Government allows $750,000 annually and permits them to continue their court within a walled section of the capital city, Seoul. The throne room of the present Prince in the east palace is a combination of the modern and the old period. The decorations are exquisite works of art, embroideries in silk, gold and silver form beautiful scenes, birds and flowers upon wall panels and screens.
