SPE

Comfort

PEAK low to me, my Saviour, low and sweet
From out the hallelujahs, sweet and low,

Lest I should fear and fall, and miss Thee so
Who art not missed by any that entreat.
Speak to me, as to Mary at thy feet
And if no precious gums my hands bestow,
Let my tears drop like amber, while I go
To reach Thy divinest voice complete
In humanest affection thus in sooth

To lose the sense of losing! As a child
Whose song-bird seeks the wood forevermore,
Is sung to in its stead by mother's mouth.
Till, sinking on her breast, love reconciled,
He sleeps the faster that he wept before.

Love, we are in God's hand.

How strange now, looks the life He makes us lead; So free we seem, so fettered fast we are!

I feel He laid the fetter: let it lie!

ROBERT BROWNING.

The Pilgrims

THE way is long and dreary,

ΤΗ

The path is bleak and bare;
Our feet are worn and weary,
But we will not despair.

More heavy was Thy burthen
More desolate Thy way;

Oh, Lamb of God who takest
The sin of the world away,
Have mercy on us.

The snows lie thick around us
In the dark and gloomy night;
And the tempest wails above us,
And the stars have hid their light;
But blacker was the darkness
Round Calvary's Cross that day : —
Oh, Lamb of God who takest
The sin of the world away,

[blocks in formation]

Our hearts are faint with sorrow

Heavy and hard to bear;

For we dread the bitter morrow,
But we will not despair.
