fessor Keller has left the Adelaide Gallery to exhibit his poses plastiques at the Olympic; but we doubt if the same success attend his classical representations at the latter establishment that he so deservedly met with at the former.

STATE OF THE ODDS, &c.

What with the commencement of the racing season, the height of the steeple-chase season, and the want of spirit which has so long been observable, our returns from the Corner would, perhaps, look better per se, than when coupled with any comment on their characİn plain fact, it has been a very harmless, uninteresting month's work, only made just worth watching for the few changes that have occurred in accordance with the running at the Spring Meetings already over. The greatest by far of these alterations has been the lift given to Sweetmeat for the Chester Cup, by Burlesque's strong form at Warwick; an increase of confidence that has now, it will be seen, indisputably established the highest weight in the highest place. Of the other improvements for this race, Miss Burns, Clumsy, and Hope are the only ones which have advanced in any striking degree on their last month's average; and of these three, we should be inclined to consider Hope as having the best cause, although as yet the worst place. In Manchester, however, we hear they even now swear by her. The investments on Clumsy, heavy and ready though (by comparison) they were, have not been so prejudicial to his companion, Best Bower, as might have been supposed; still the public incline to the later fashion, while Miss Burns, with her six years old, and her six stone odd, has, like many other masters and misses in good situations, to return thanks to party influence, rather than to the voci populi. Of the more moderately esteemed, we may select The Magnet, Arthur, Fitzallen, Billy Purvis, Weatherbit, and Mermaid, as the cream of the rear rank. The last of these, Mermaid, has lately changed country and owners, being now in the hands of Jones, at Marlborough, and in the name of Sir John Gerard. Taking the worthy Baronet's success with Meal and (hitherto) with Pantasa as the criterion, we could scarcely regard this as a change for the better. Fortune owes Sir John a turn, and we only trust when it does come, it may be in something of the same ratio as the spirit with which he has awaited its arrival. So much for the ins; and of the outs we need only point to Whinstone, who, suffering from a gradual decline, is at present priced at forty to one without a taker; after him to the Baron, who scarcely deserves a line in our table; and last of all, to the first of all last year, Intrepid to wit, who, report goes to say, has broken down.

A vice versa game with Brocardo, who comes up again as determined this month as he went down last, has been the great gun of the Derby betting. He promises even still further to improve,

there being a decided minority in the opposition to the latest as the lowest figure we quote him at. Of Tibthorpe, almost equally on the rise, we should still hesitate to say as much, although during the month backed at even-William's against John's best. Touching Sting, it has been nearly all talk-the indisposition of Mr. Forth continuing to furnish the argument. Iago, Spithead, and The Traverser, again, hold a rank little more than nominal; while with Malcolm the odds and the enemy are on the increase. Of the remainder, Humdrum and Poynton, both in very fair demand, alone are worthy of notice; a fancy bet, and a name forgotten, forthwith giving Martext, Sharston, and Co., the true claim to a figure in our list.

A trifle or so on Queen Anne and the Sussex fillies is the extent of the Oaks business; the Yorkshire mare, Vanish, holding the premier position by courtesy-a piece of politeness that the decision of the Trial at Warwick should tend to strengthen. The Newmarket Handicap, though got up in the metropolis of the turf, and the Epsom Handicap, though supported by the metropolis of the country, are events anticipated in so mild a form as to entirely dispense with the duties of an interpreter.

THE EFFECTS OF "LARKING."-A Mr. Singleton, a fellow of Trinity College, Oxford, lost his life in the early part of last month, while indulging in this very snobbish and dangerous practice. It appears in returning from the Bicester steeple-chases, the unfortunate young man engaged with a friend in a race on the high road, and came, before he was aware of it, at full speed on the turnpikegate. From the severity of the fall he here experienced, Mr. Singleton never recovered; and now, as a matter of course, his death is attributed entirely to steeple-chasing. How we wish not merely the learned authorities of Oxford, but our rising sportsmen more especially, could be brought to look at the thing in its proper light! Can there be a more unsportsmanlike trick than riding a race on the high road? Or can there be a more cruel one, let alone the risk, than that of forcing a horse to his utmost, after he has already done a good day's work? Ride a hunter, as a hunter, as straight as you like whilst hounds are running; and treat a hack as a hack when you go to see others perform; but avoid the "larking" back, the racing for bottles of wine, and "goes" of gin, as you value your character as a gentleman and a sportsman. Perhaps of all the low things connected with sport, nothing is worse than to see two fools riding an improvisatore match between the heats on a race-course; in our opinion, it beats Mr. Assheton Smith's "Catch my horse hollow, and we only hope to see it condemned by as high an authority. The risk, moreover, to those engaged in it is, unfortunately, not the extent of the evil; if any ill does deservedly arise, it is almost certain, as in the present instance, to be charged to the sport, in no ways answerable either for the sufferer or the practice.

The following is all we have to record on the Newmarket Handicap:-15 to 1 agst. Dexterous, 3 years old, 6st. 1lb.; 18 to 1 agst. Wee Pet, 6 years old, 7st. 2lb.; 20 to 1 agst.
