Mash'alchee, a

Mātādeen, (literally) the 'mother
or goddess of faith.'
Maulchit, an Anglo-Indian term
for a return note, a written

answer.

Maund-Maun, an Indian measure
of eighty pounds-weight.
Mem-Sahib, or -Sahab, madam,
lady; a term applied to European
ladies.

Mistry = Mistree, a workman, a
mason, a builder.

capital of the Hindoos, while
those of the old Mussulman Delhi,
before Shahjahan removed his
capital to the present site, are
to be seen all around. Most pro-
minent among the ruins is the
Kutub Minar, with the highest
column standing alone in the
world. It is but one of the two
minarets of the most wonderful
mosque which Sultan Kutbuddin
(1206–1210) had formed the grand
project of erecting to commemor-
ate his victories, but he died
before only a part was finished;
the few middle arches are the
tallest ever seen, and the fellow
minarets on the opposite side are
still standing in their unfinished
state. The tomb of the famous
Mussulman saint, Khwājā Kut-
buddin, is in the village, and is
visited by thousands of pilgrims.

Kutub; their Kothee or house
still exists in a ruined and
deserted state.

city; a town guard, a policeman. Lāc, a hundred thousand. Lattee Lathee, a club, a heavy stick.

Loot, plunder.

Lord-Sahib, or -Sahab, a term applied to a high English official; a governor or commander-in-chief. Lunka, (literally) the resplendent;' a name by which Ceylon was known to the people of India, China, &c.

Mahout=Mahāwat, an elephant

driver.

Mall, the principal road used for afternoon drives.

Mohur - Mohar, a gold coin, a seal. Mohurram = Moharram, the name of the first month of the Hejra or year of the Mussulmans, who hold it sacred for the first ten days on account of the great battle fought at Koofa between Husain (son of Ali, the fourth great Caliph or successor, and Fatma, daughter of the Prophet) and Yazeed, in which Husain and his relations and followers were deprived of water for several days till he was killed. The Mussulmans greatly mourn his loss during these days. Mohurram (=Moharram) Sabells, places built and decorated by Mussulmans during the Mohurram month for distribution of cooled water and sherbets to the thirsty. This they consider a pious act; it is done in remembrance of Husain, whose army at Koofa was cut off with watersupply by the enemy. Page 262. Moonshee = Moonshi, a writer, a secretary.

Pâjee, stupid, silly, mean. Pandy=Pände, a title of the Brahmans. The descendants of King Pandoo, who distinguished themselves in wars, were called Pandowas. See Appendix E. Pawn Pan, leaves of the Piperbetel-chewed by Natives along with some aromatic spices. Pergunah, (literally) 'a village that has been bestowed upon a person as a Jaghir or free gift for some great act.' Poonahana is a village between Bhurtpore and Delhi. Poorbeahs=Poorbiyas, (literally) 'Eastern people.' A tribe found in Bengal, the North-west Provinces, the Punjab, and Oude. Pucka Pakka, (literally) ripe, ready, strong;' properly built, properly finished, properly confirmed; as, a pucka bridge, a pucka road, a pucka appointment. Pucka is the antithesis to kutcha. Punkah=Pankha, a large fan, which is suspended from the ceiling and worked by means of a rope pulled over a pulley. Puttoo Pattoo, a kind of thick woollen cloth, which is made into winter garments by the Natives.

Rāj, rule; government. There was a Native prophecy that British Rule would last but 100 years, and would come to an end on the centenary of the Battle of Plassy, which was fought on the 23rd of June 1757. Pages 80, 164.

Native officer in command of a horse or lancer regiment. Rissalah = Risalah,

a troop of horse, a regiment of lancers. Rupee, a silver coin in circulation in India originally worth 2s., now only worth about ls. 4d.
