PUBLISHERS' NOTE

This volume contains all the verses by Mr. Rudyard Kipling originally printed in "Departmental Ditties" and "Barrack-Room Ballads," with most of those added as "Other Verses" to the earlier English editions of the foregoing. It also brings together for the first time the verses from his prose works published under the various titles of "Plain Tales from the Hills," "Soldiers Three," "In Black and White," "American Notes," "Mine Own People, "The Courting of Dinah Shadd," "The Story of the Gadsbys,' "The City of Dreadful Night," "Under the Deodars," "The Phantom 'Rickshaw," "Wee Willie Winkie," and "The Light That Failed." These have been supplemented by voluminous selections from the later poems, including the Quebec stanza from "The Song of the Cities," suppressed in the American editions of his works.

No former publication of Mr. Kifling's poetic work contains so many titles as are here brought together, while additional value is given the book by the inclusion of all his early verses, many of them hitherto ignored as poems.
