IT is scarcely necessary to observe, that a knowledge of ANCIENT GEOGRAPHY is so highly advantageous to the proper understanding of History, that any attempt to render it familiar, cannot fail of being acceptable.

The following pages are translated from the French, and as they are simple in the style, and seem well calculated to form an Introduction to larger works, the Publisher is induced to think, that such a little Publication is likely to be patronized by schools and private families. Should it be successful, it may be necessary, perhaps, to give a few Maps; but, as most seminaries are in possession of "Wilkinson's Atlas Classica," or, "Cellarius's Maps of Ancient Geography," to them the Student can at all times have

recourse.

AN ABRIDGMENT

OF

ANCIENT GEOGRAPHY.

LESSON I.

WHAT is Ancient Geography?

Ancient Geography is the description of the earth, as it was anciently known and divided. It comprehends only the three parts. of our continent; namely, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

What is precisely known of it?

The ancients had an exact knowledge only of the countries under the rule of the Roman empire; so that, properly speaking, ancient geography has but that empire for its object.

Why was the rest of the world unknown?
