The Eighteen Christian Centuries. By the Rev. JAMES WHITE, author of a "History of France." With a Copious Index. From the second Edinburgh Edition. 1 vol. 12mo. 538 pages. $1 25.

This is a striking and peculiar contribution to historical literature. It is the historical spirit of each one of the Eighteen Christian Centuries seen through the medium of a master mind. The history of each century, from the first of our era, is reviewed and generalized, grasped as a whole: its prevailing purpose or idea individualized, and its result, as a century, given to the reader. The work is singularly original, comprehensive, clear, and masterly. It will give the general reader a clearer idea of the general history of Christendom than can be obtained in many months of study, and will prove beyond question a welcome and valuable remembrancer to many especial students of history. It has been the general complaint against history itself, that it is too much a collection of mere dates, and such a complaint is the highest eulogy of this book, which dispensing with any but the largest divisions of time, except, indeed, when a date may serve to explain or illuminate some act or event, eliminates by its spirit entirely the prevailing lesson of history.

"Readers of his delightful book, Voyage of a Naturalist,' will recognize in this new work his power as a writer, whatever may be the scientific verdict on his theories."-N. Y. OBSERVER.

"The conclusions at which he aims are so startling, that they cannot fail to meet with considerable opposition. Mr. Darwin himself is far from anticipating that they will be generally received. But he has certainly a right to demand that they shall be opposed only in the same spirit of candor and moderation by which his advocacy of them is so eminently distinguished.”— LONDON LITERARY GAZETTE.

The investigation occupied all my spare time for about eighteen months. I examined carefully, prayerfully, and earnestly, until I was satisfied, beyond a doubt, that the old Church was the true, and the only true Church."--EXTRACT FROM PREFACE.
