or materials committed to his or her care, or shall take or arry away, without permission of the overseer of the poor rkeeper of the said workhouse, any clothing, goods, or materials provided for the use of such poor-house, or of any the poor therein, complaint thereof may be made upon ath to one or more justices of the peace acting for the disfict or division in which such parish shall be situate; and ach justices are hereby authorized to hear such complaint, nd upon conviction to commit the offender to the house of orrection, there to be kept to hard labour for any time not xceeding two calendar months, nor less than seven days.

An Act to repeal so much of an Act, passed in the Seventh Year
of King James the First, as relates to the Punishment of Wo-
men delivered of Bastard Children; and to make other Provi-
sions in lieu thereof.
[9th June, 1810.]

"Whereas an act was passed in the seventh year of the 7 Jac. 1. c. 4, eign of His late Majesty King James the First, intituled An act for the due execution of divers laws and statutes heretofore made against rogues, vagabonds, and sturdy beggars, and other lewd and idle persons; And whereas, it is among other things directed and enacted, that every lewd woman who after the then present session of parliament should have any bastard which might be chargeable to the parish, should be committed to the house of correction, there to be punished and set on work during the term of one whole year; and that if such woman should offend again in like manner, she should be committed to the house of correction, there to remain until she should put in good securities not to offend so again: And whereas the punishment aforesaid, if rigorously inflicted, might be too severe, and might subject the offender to imprisonment for life :" May it therefore please Your Majesty, that it may be enacted; and be it enacted by the King's most excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the lords spiritual and temporal, and commons, in this present

An Act to amend so much of an Act, passed in the Eighth and Ninth Year of King William the Third, as requires poor Persons receiving Alms to wear Badges.

[9th June, 1810.]

"Whereas by an act passed in the eighth and ninth year of the reign of His late Majesty King William the Third, intituled, An act for supplying some defects in the laws for the relief of

the poor of this kingdom, it is enacted, that every such person 8, from and after the first day of September, one thousand six undred and ninety-seven, shall be upon the collection and eceive relief of any parish or place, and the wife and children fany such person cohabiting in the same house (such child nly excepted as shall be by the churchwardens and overseers the poor permitted to live at home in order to have the are of and attend an impotent and helpless parent), shall upon he shoulder of the right sleeve of the uppermost garment of very such person, in an open and visible manner, wear such adge or mark as is hereinafter mentioned and expressed; that to say, a large roman P, together with the first letter of the ame of the parish or place whereof such poor person is an inabitant, cut either in red or blue cloth, as by the churchFardens and overseers of the poor it shall be directed and apointed; and if any such poor person shall at any time nelect or refuse to wear such a badge, or mark as aforesaid, and in manner as aforesaid, it shall and may be lawful for any ustice of the peace of the county, city, liberty, or town cororate, where any such offence shall be committed, upon complaint to him for that purpose to be made, to punish every ach offender for every such offence, either by ordering of his her relief or usual allowance on the collection to be abrided, suspended, or withdrawn, or otherwise by committing of any such offender to the house of correction, there to be whipt and kept to hard labour for any number of days not exceeding one and twenty, as to the said justice in his discretion it shall seem most meet; and if any such churchwarden or overseer of the poor, from and after the said first day of September, shall relieve any such poor person not having and wearing such badge or mark as aforesaid, being thereof convicted upon the oath of one or more credible witness or witnesses before any justice of the peace of the county, city, liberty, or town corporate where any such offence shall be committed, shall forfeit for every such offence the sum of twenty shillings, to be levied by distress and sale of the goods of every such offender, by warrant under the hand and seal of any such justice; one moiety to be to the use of the informer, and the other to the poor of the parish where the offence shall be committed and whereas it is expedient that the said part of such act be repealed; May it therefore please Your Majesty, that it may be so much of enacted; and be it enacted by the King's most excellent Ma- recited act as requires poor jesty, by and with the advice and consent of the lords spiritual persons to and temporal, and commons, in this present parliament as- wear badges embled, and by the authority of the same, That from and after repealed. the passing of this act, the said part of such recited act shall be, and the same is hereby repealed.
