CONDENSED DIARY OF PRINCIPAL EVENTS OF THE SIEGE, FROM MONDAY THE STH OF JUNE TO MONDAY THE 8th June, Monday.-Battle of Budlee-ka-Serai about five miles from Alleepore, and second fight at Ridge before Delhi-Hindoo Rao's house and Flagstaff on Ridge occupied-More than twenty guns captured-Goorkhas behave admirably-Colonel Chester killedOur Force left Alleepore at 2 A.M., last fight over at about 9 A.M. -Tents pitched about 4 P.M. before Delhi, on parade-ground and site of ruined cantonments. 9th June, Tuesday.-Our guns command gateways of city—Arrival of Daly's Corps of 'Guides,' and of General Reed in infirm health -Enemy make a grand attack on Ridge at about 2 P.M.All troops turn out, and enemy driven back-In evening another attack. 10th June, Wednesday.-Flag hoisted on Flagstaff Tower-Firing all day from our batteries into city-People look gloomy, and talk of necessity of assault. 11th June, Thursday. - Small party of Gwalior insurgents (Horse) give themselves up-City described as a perfect pandemonium— Major Martin and his Irregulars, the 4th, arrive in Camp-Some of enemy's shell fall near Head-Quarter tents, which are therefore moved. 12th June, Friday.-Metcalfe House occupied-Enemy again attack Ridge, and lose heavily; they surprise Flagstaff picket, and kill Captain Knox. 13th June, Saturday.-Arrangements made for assault on city between 1 and 2 A.M.-Delay occurs through pickets not being withdrawn in time, so assault abandoned-Enemy again attack us; party of their Cavalry get round to our left-Very hot. 14th June, Sunday.—Service in Camp-Enemy attack Metcalfe House; their Cavalry again get round our left flank. 15th June, Monday.-Attack by enemy in force at 7 A. M. on our left flank; they are driven back-Another assault planned-Council of War decided on-Talk of waiting for reinforcements-Brigadier Wilson advocates waiting-Greathed, of Engineers, wishes to assault at once. 314 CONDENSED DIARY OF PRINCIPAL EVENTS. 16th June, Tuesday.—Enemy quiet-We are entrenching our position— Hold another Council of War-Decide to wait for all reinforcements coming up before assault is made; this will allow of insurgents being followed up and destroyed. 17th June, Wednesday.—In afternoon we attack a battery being erected on our right flank in village of Kissengunge - Two Columns engaged under Majors Reid and Tombs-Gun captured; village and battery burnt and destroyed-Many of enemy killed; our loss small-Wounded and sick, and ladies sent to Meerut. 18th June, Thursday.-Lieutenant Wheatley killed, and several men killed and wounded in or near Hindoo Rao's; Engineers blamed for this, as they had been ordered to place sandbags to protect openings-Shell falls close to mess-tent. 19th June, Friday.-Serious attack on our right rear by Nussereebad mutineers-People looking serious-Daly and Becher wounded— Attack repulsed-Our loss ten officers and about one hundred men killed and wounded; enemy lose heavily. 20th June, Saturday.-One captured gun brought in-Same force as yesterday again attack us unsuccessfully-Arrival of convoy of between two and three hundred camels with grain from Alleepore. 21st June, Sunday.-Service at 6 A. M. 22nd June, Monday.-Bridge at Bhagput broken-Hodson takes temporary command of 'Guides'-Baird Smith appointed Chief-Engineer in place of Colonel Laughton-Weather very hot. 23rd June, Tuesday.—Day predicted as end of our ‘Raj’—Grand attack by enemy, who are unsuccessful at every point; but we suffer heavily-Generalship not good-Every one anxious-Arrival of Olpherts' Force and convoy. 24th June, Wednesday.-Arrival of Neville Chamberlain, new Acting Adjutant-General. 25th June, Thursday.—Quiet all day-Attack contemplated to-morrow. 26th June, Friday.—No attack from either side-Anxiety about Bhagput bridge. 27th June, Saturday.-Enemy again attack us: they lose four hundred killed and wounded; our loss under thirty-Arrival of convoy of two hundred camels with stores, rum, &c. from Meerut-Commencement of rains. 28th June, Sunday.-Arrival of Colonel Greathed with 8th King's and Rothney's Sikhs; also large convoy of stores-Part of Bhagput bridge of boats burnt-Hodson sent to report. 29th June, Monday.-Longfield appointed Brigadier in place of Graves, who goes away on sick leave-We cut off canal supply of water to city. 30th June, Tuesday.-Enemy again attack us, but are repulsed; we lose thirty or forty killed and wounded-Bridge over Jumna broken up by river rising. |
