Signor Luigi Caffola, the author of this performance, has allo published another fine didactic poem on metals.

XVI. De cláris Archigymnafii Bononienfis Profefforibus, a Seculo XI. ufque ad Seculum XIV. Vol. I. folio. Bononiæ.

THIS work was, by command of Benedict XIV. undertaken by Ab bate Mauro Sarti, and after his death completed and published by his fucceffor, Abbate Mauro Fattorini, and is a valuable addi-, tion to literary history.

The university of Bologna has always been famous, but chiefly during the XIIth and fubfequent centuries, on account of the ap plaufe with which its profeffors taught the Roman civil and canon laws. The lives of its profeffors are here related under the following feveral claffes: first, the profeffors of Roman civil, and of the canon laws, being the most numerous clafs; then the profeffors of notariship, (an art in which the degree of doctor was formerly taken,) thofe of phyfic, of philofophy, of grammar, (in which de grees were likewife conferred,) and of divinity: laftly of the archdeans of Bologna, who have by the popes been invested with a fuperintendency like to that of chancellors in other universities.

We will here just point out the names of fome of the most eminent and remarkable profeffors: of Civilians, Irnerius; Vacarius, the first profeffor of Roman laws in England; the famous Thomas Archbishop of Canterbury; Azo; Peter de Vinea (not de Vineis) Accurfius; Rolandinus Romancius, one of the first profeffors of criminal laws of Canonifts, Gratianus; Raymundus de Pennaforti; pope Innocent IV. Guilielmus Durantis: of profeffors of Notariship, Rolandinus Paffagerius; of Phyficians, Thaddeus of Florence, an eminent phyfician, who by his will left a prefcription to the poor, though we are not told for what disease: of Grammarians, Boncompagnus, of Florence of Divines, Petrus Lombar dus, pope Alexander III. and Anthony of Padua.

A remarkable partof the appendixcontains a catalogue of books, with the prices for which they were formerly to be lent for reading or copying; for in thofe ancient times there were people, called Sta tionarii, who lived by lending books to students to read or to copy and whofe prices appear to have fometimes been immoderate, fince they were thus fixed and fettled by authority.

The first volume is divided into two parts, making together 825 pages, befides 28 pages containing the preface. The fecond vo lume is to bring down the hiftory of the univerfity, and the biography of its profeffors, to the present time.

FOREIGN LITERARY INTELLIGENCE. 17. L'Ami d'un bon Roi, ou choix d'Anecdotes et Pensées de Henry IV 8vo. Paris.

THIS friend of a good king proves to be a bookseller, Coftard;

he justly praises Henry's bravery, though fometimes, as at Canfe and Cahors, it bordered on temerity, and his other virtues, without diffembling his exceffive fondnefs of gaming and women; he might have added, his ingratitude to the proteftants, and omitted fome droll anecdotes, rather fit to fwell a compilation than to do credit to the memory of a great and amiable king.

This edition appears to be correct; the print is neat, but rather too small.

Cafaubon's learned tract was become scarce, and as it gives a just idea of the fatirical drama of the Greeks, and of the Roman fatyra, it deferved a republication. Spanheim's differtation on the fame fubject, was by him originally prefixed to his translation of Julian's Cæfars. Cafaubon's life was written by Almeloveen, and is here abridged, with fome alterations. To the preface Jofeph Scaliger's notes on the Cyclops of Euripides have been subjoined.

The Danish fleet fent against Algiers fuffered feverely by various diseases, especially putrid and rheumatic fevers, dyfentery, and the fcurvy, most of them produced by the bad nefs of provifions, and want of dry cloathing. Mr Aafkow's journal is plain, concife, and practical, and may be confidered as one good refult at least of that unfortunate expedition.

Severely pointed against the pretenfions of baron de Caftellet, fon of the famous Mr. Ailhaud, and proprietor of three lordships, acquired by the fale of Ailhaud's powders.

31. Jungendorum Marium Fluviorumque omnis ævi molimina. Au&tor Jer. Johan. Oberlinus, &c. 4to. Argentorati.

A very comprehenfive and fuccinct account of all the navigable canals undertaken or executed in every age and country. 32. Efemplare, o fa faggio fondamentale pratico del Contrapunto sopra il Canto fermo. Parte prima. 4to. Bologna.

33. Three Dialogues concerning Liberty. 8vo. 21. Dodsley. HESE Dialogues are maintained between two persons, only One of whom may properly be confidered as a fpeaker, and the other the narrator of the converfation. The first Dialogue

Contains an enquiry into the idea and extent of civil liberty where the nature of that privilege is clearly explained, and the neceffity of certain reftraints upon it established, for the general happiness of mankind. The fubject of the fecond Dialogue is the origin of civil government, which is treated with no lefs perfpicuity and justness of obfervation; and in the third, where religious liberty is confidered, we are equally interested by the depth of the author's difcernment and the fagacity of his re flections. It is unneceffary to add, that thefe Dialogues cannot fail of affording great pleasure to fuch readers as have a tafte for rational and unembarraffed inveftigations into thefe abftracted, but important fubjects on which we here meet with many juft, ingenious, and ftriking fentiments.

34. The Honour of the University of Oxford defended against the illiberal Afperfion of Ed Be, Efq. with pertinent Ob Jervations on the prefent Rebellion in America. 8vo. 15. 6d. Kearfly.

The tranflation of a pamphlet which appeared in our Review a few months ago, under the title of, De Tumultibus Americanis deque eorum Concitatoribus Meditatio Senilis.

The verfion appears to be executed with fidelity, and may anfwer the defign of diffufing more widely the fentiments contained in the original.

35. A Further Examination of our prefent American Measures, and of the Reafens and Principles on which they are founded. 8vo. 35. Baldwin.

The author of this pamphlet writes with greater coolness, ac curacy, and force, than is generally to be met with among the advocates for the colonies. His judgment, however, respecting the iffue of the conteft, feems to be strongly biaffed by a prepoffeffion in favour of the American claim."

36. Journal of the Proceedings of the Congress, held at Philadel phia, May 10, 1775. Published by Order of the Congress. 8vo. 3. Almon.

We are here prefented with the various refolutions of this infatuated fociety, from their meeting on the roth of May, to their adjournment on the ift of Auguft, 1775; refolutions equally expreffive of the folly, prefumption, and extravagance of the affembly that formed them, and which ought to excite in the breaft of every loyal British fubject, an earnest wish for the humiliation of thofe daring and ambitious demagogues. 37. The Plea of the Colonies on the Charges brought against them by Lord Md and others. 8.00. IS. Almon.

One of the numerous tribe of partizans who have ranged themselves on the fide of the colonies; but particularly diftinguifhed by his virulence and abuse, with which he abounds much more than in rational argument.

See Crit. Rev. for Feb. 1776, P. 152,

38. A Profpect of the Confequences of the prefent Conduct of Great Britain towards America. 800. 15. 6d. Almon.

The author of this pamphlet appears to be one of those writers' who pretend to great penetration into futurity, in which they affect to difcover dreadful misfortunes that muft inevitably befall the British arms, in the prefent conteft with the colonies. It is time only that can confirm or fully refute fuch predictions; and we shall therefore make no other remark, but that they feem not to be very confiftent with the laws of political optics. 39. Serious and impartial Observations on the Bleffings of Liberty and Peace. 8vo. 1s. 6d. Payne.

Thefe Obfervations relate chiefly to the prefent contest between Great Britain and America, which the author treats in a plain, candid, and unbiassed manner; proceeding afterwards to fhew how much the profperity of a nation is influenced by a regard to religion. They feem to be the lucubrations of a con templative," fincere, and well-meaning perfon.

40. Abort Appeal to the People of Great Britain; upon the unavoidable Neceffity of the prefent War with our dijaffected Co lonies. 12mo. 2d. Kearfly.

This concife and nervous Appeal expofes, in the ftrongest colours, the falfhood and inconfiftency of the declarations which the colonifts have made towards juftifying their oppofition to the fupreme authority of parliament. The arguments here advanced on this fubject are equally clear and forcible, and muft fully invalidate the American pretenfions, in the opinion of every reader who perufes them with the attention they deferve.

41. Thoughts on the present State of the Poor, and the intended Bill for their better Relief and Employment. By a Kentishman. 8vo. IS. Conant.

The writer of this pamphlet is an opponent to the intended fcheme of eftablishing general workhoufes, and produces an inftance of a workhoufe which has been erected twenty-feven years, the expence attending which has been half as much more as that of maintaining the poor of the fame parifh formerly. He does not, however, affert that workhoufes are the fole cause of the increase in the poor's rates, but juftly thinks it a fufficient reafon for rejecting them, that they do not decreafe thofe rates. Nothing, as he truly remarks, can be got by the proposed act of parliament, but a compulfory claufe to oblige parishes to come into the scheme of district workhoufes; for, as the law now fands, any number of parishes may join, with the confent of the juftices of the divifion, and erect a common workhoufe. And it is, fays he, an unfavourable prefumption that but one such aggregate workhoufe has been attempted in this county (Kent) and even that lafted only a very few years; and he infers with propriety from this circumftance, that, had this workhouse been manifeftly for the benefit and advantage of the parishes concerned, it would not have been abolished. He has heard of no infance where workhouses have fucceeded, but
