PREFACE. that I should have rendered my work more entertaining, if I had banished all quotations from the text, or at fartheft had given the meaning only of what I refer to inftead of the original words. But as the whole is matter of close and dark inquiry, I thought it highly requifite, as I proceeded ftep by step, to bring my authorities immediately under the eye of the reader, that he might fee both the propriety and truth of the evidences, to which I appeal, and form a judgment of the inferences, which I make, in order as I produce them. As I have prefumed to point out errors in the works of many eminent writers, I must neceffarily fuppose that I am liable to fimilar failures, and must be prepared for a like detection. But I hope that I shall not be found guilty of any dangerous mistakes, such as may affect my argument, and ruin my purpose. I likewife hope that I have no where delivered myself with undue warmth, or feverity. There are many authors of whom I have spoken freely, but I believe it needs no apology. In refpect to those of real eminence, however I may differ in fome particulars, I flatter myself that I have every where paid a due regard to their fuperior PREFACE. superior merit. For I should be guilty of great ingratitude, if I did not upon all occafions render every just acknowledgement to persons, who have laboured fo much for the public good: by whose learning I have been greatly enriched, and by whose very errors I have profited.
