PREFACE TO VOLUME XXII "Mr. Britling," first published under the title of "Mr. Britling Sees It Through," was begun early in 1915 and written as the war went on. It was a chronicle of contemporary thought and feeling. The author had been under the persuasion that the war would end in about a year's time; he chose his title in that belief, he became accustomed to his title, and he kept it although quite manifestly nothing had been "seen through" by the time the story ended. People found themselves in this book and it had a very great sale. He takes this opportunity of pruning the title, but otherwise he has not touched the story. |
