PREFACE.

A VARIETY of causes combine in this country, at present, to advance some of the most difficult among the social problems to the foreground of practical thought. What follows is an attempt to consider the help which the Christian preacher, acting within his own vocation, may bring to their solution.

No depreciation of other forms of help is intended. The gospel not only sympathizes with every endeavour, on levels lower than its own, to deal with the evils in social life; it also scatters the seeds of such endeavours wherever it is proclaimed. But at a time when some are avowing loss of confidence in the efficacy of the gospel, and some are advocating as remedies what can only touch the surface of our social ailments, it may be allowed to one who believes the gospel to be the supreme and radical remedy, to indicate the services which may be rendered to society, and which over and over again have been rendered, by a faithful application of its principles from the pulpit.
