Philadelphia, St. Andrew's Church,

TUESDAY, MAY 16, 1876, 5 O'CLOCK, P. M.

This being the day appointed for the meeting of the Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Pennsylvania, a number of Clergymen and Lay Deputies attended at St. Andrew's Church, Philadelphia.

Before the organization of the Convention, Evening Prayer was read by the Rev. Jacob Miller, the Rev. W. F. B. Jackson, and the Rev. Wm. White Bronson. The Rt. Rev. Wm. Bacon Stevens, D.D., LL.D., took the chair, and called the Convention to order.

The Secretary proceeded to call the names of the Clergy entitled to seats, from a list, prepared by the Bishop, when ninety-three answered to their names.

The Secretary then called the names of the Lay Deputies, from the certificates presented in the form prescribed in the Canon, when one hundred and thirtytwo answered and took their seats.

The Convention then proceeded to the election of a Secretary and an Assistant Secretary.

The Rev. Dr. Childs was nominated for the office of Secretary; their being no other nomination, the balloting was dispensed with, and he was thereupon duly elected viva voce.

Clifford P. MacCalla, Esq., a Lay Deputy from Christ Church, Media, was nominated for Assistant Secretary,

and there being no other nomination, he was duly elected Assistant Secretary.

The Secretary of the Convention reported, that at the last Convention the Committee on Canons had reported in favor of a change in Canon VI, as follows:

Resolved, That Canon VI, be so amended that the time for the Bishop's Address be transferred from B of the second day, and made B of the first day of the order of business of the Convention; and that the other letters designating the paragraphs appointing the business of the two days, respectively be conformed to this alteration-upon which final action had not been taken.

The President of Convention then appointed the following Standing Committees:

The Rev. J. W. Claxton, D.D., nominated Mr. Benjamin G. Godfrey, for Treasurer of the Episcopal and Convention Fund.

The Rev. E. A. Foggo, D.D., nominated Mr. Richard P. McCullagh, for Treasurer of the Christmas Fund. Mr. George M. Conarroe nominated the Rev. James W. Robins, D.D., for Registrar of the Diocese.

The Rev. W. F. Paddock, D.D., nominated:

for Trustees of the Christmas Fund.

The Minutes of the Proceedings of the Standing Committee, together with their Annual Report for the past year, and the account of the Treasurer of the Episcopal and Convention Fund was laid upon the Secretary's table.

Mr. William Welsh gave notice, that he would move, to-morrow, the alteration of Canon VI, as reported by the Secretary, as the unfinished business of the last Annual Convention, and also the alteration of Canon V, section I, so as to read: The Convention shall meet at 4 o'clock, P. M., on the day appointed.

On motion of Mr. William Welsh,

Ordered, That this House hold two sessions every day, to wit: from 9 A.M. to 2 P.M., and from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M.; provided that on Wednesday the Convention shall meet at 10 o'clock for Divine Service and the Holy Communion.

On motion of the Rev. J. W. Claxton, D.D.,

Resolved, That the Secretary prepare ballots for the election of the Standing Committee, containing the names of all persons nominated, to be headed, ten persons to be voted for, of whom five shall be Clergymen and five Laymen.

On motion of the Rev. R. C. Matlack, it was

Resolved, That Clergymen belonging to this Diocese, but not entitled to seats in this Convention, Clergymen of other Dioceses, Clergymen of other Churches in Communion with this Church, and Candidates for Holy Orders in the Protestant Episcopal Church, be admitted to the sittings of the Convention.

The Secretary then read an invitation from the Directors of the Athenæum, tendering the courtesy of the Library to the members of the Convention during its sessions; also, an invitation from the Executive Council of the Free Church Association to attend its Annual Meeting to be held this evening, in St. Mark's Church. On motion it was

Resolved, That the thanks of the Convention be tendered to the Directors of the Athenæum, and the Executive Council of the Free Church Association for their courteous invitations.

On motion adjourned.

The Convention met pursuant to adjournment. Morning Prayer was read by the Rev. V. Hummel Berghaus, Rev. Henry Tullidge, D.D., Rev. Wm. R. Stockton, Rev. Wm. Newton and Rev. George G. Field.

The sermon was preached by the Rev. E. Y. Buchanan, D.D., from Psalm cxxv, 3d verse.

The Holy Communion was administered by the Bishop, assisted by the Rt. Rev. Bishop Elliott, the Rt. Rev. Bishop Neely, Rev. Theodore S. Rumney, D.D., Rev. Wilbur F. Paddock, D.D., and the Rev. Wm. H. Vibbert. The Rev. James Walker read the Post Communion Service.
