PREFACE

Y husband by his will made several years before his death bequeathed a sum of money

to defray the expenses of publishing a book on metaphysics, on which he was at that time engaged, his letters to The Times and an addition to his songs. As the time went on, however, he decided not to publish the metaphysics, preferring that his main contributions to that subject should be represented by Physical Realism and the Articles in the Encyclopædia Britannica. But he always desired to collect and reprint his letters to The Times and the songs.

The additional songs have now been published by Messrs. Novello, and a selection, comprising the major portion of the letters, appears in the accompanying volume, which has been printed for private circulation among his friends.

With the letters are included:

Mr. Thomas Case,

Philosopher and Politician,

Obituary Notice, The Times,
November 2, 1925.

Copy of a letter of October 20, 1924, by the
late Lord Curzon, then Chancellor of
Oxford University.

An appreciation from the Pelican Record of
March 1926.

In the production of the letters I have been fortunate in obtaining the help of my husband's close friend and colleague, Mr. R. B. Mowat, Fellow and Tutor of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. Mr. Mowat has written an introduction to the letters, and has prefixed short notes to many of the letters which explain the circumstances of their appearance.

The Times have kindly given their permission to reproduce the Obituary Notice and the letters from The Times, together with three letters from Literature. My grateful thanks are due to them for this, and also to Lady Curzon for permitting the late Chancellor's letter to be included in the volume.

June, 1927.

E. D. CASE.
