PREFACE.

BOOK is used for the information it contains, and to appreciate the value of a book it must be read. A good many books are glanced through and then relegated to the shelf. Expressions of opinions show that this is not the case with this one. Year by year this publication is more sought for, and your editor is striving to keep pace with the demand, and at the same time to add to the general information. As far as limit will permit, new food for thought and important to the architect, the layman, and those connected with the building business, is contributed.

The present edition covers a wider field than its predecessors, but previous issues should not be put aside. To keep in touch with the changes. which have been made from time to time in the Building Ordinances, the Sanitary Laws, the Fire Limits and along other lines it will be necessary to look through the contents of this work very carefully. In reference to the Building Ordinance and the arrangement used here a gentleman thoroughly conversant with the situation says:

"In looking over the various compilations of the Building Ordinances, including the one compiled by the Chicago Architects' Business Association, I am free to say that the arrangement of the latter, to my way of thinking, is the best, i. e., having the amendments, and those matters under the supervision of the Commissioner of Buildings, appear by themselves. The scheme of placing the Amendments after or following the sections amended, may commend itself to many, and is certainly one way of obtaining the results sought for, but my personal preference is as I have stated. The revision of all the police laws governing the city is now under consideration, and if carried through will mean of course an entire overhauling and "boiling down" of the Building Ordinance and the various amendments since its passage (March 28, 1898), so that by next year you would have an ordinance that could be published free from these bothersome additions and amendments."

In the new matter introduced will be found data in connection with Steam and Hot Water Heating, Specifications for Fireproofing with Hollow Tile, Drawings and comparisons of the orders of Architecture, practical suggestions on many geometrical figures, and much information which will be of incalculable utility to the reader.

Want of space prevents further specific enumeration of the contents. Suffice it to say, the many who have contributed to the success of the work are entitled to the hearty thanks of the Chicago Architects' Business Association, and they are herewith tendered.
