By E. C. STEDMAN. Crown 8vo, $2.25.

"The appearance of this book is a notable event in American letters. No such thorough and conscientious study of the tendencies and qualities of our poetry has been attempted before, nor has any volume of purely literary criticism been written in this country upon so broad and noble a plan and with such ample power. Mr. Stedman's work stands quite alone; it has no predecessor, and it leaves room for no rival."New York Tribune.

"It is indeed refreshing to come upon a volume so devoid of the limitations of current criticism, so wholesome, so sane, so perceptive, so just, and so vivifying as we find in this collection of essays on the Poets of America.' The volume may indeed be regarded as epoch-making. Its influence on our national literature is likely to be both deep and lasting."-The Literary World, Boston.

John Grayhurst, a young American, fresh from the goldfields of California, in 1850 visits England for the purpose of investigating the genealogy of his friend Julius Shustoke. The reader is introduced with him into the quiet society of a Midland parish, with its quaint happy life and characters, hears the old English songs and ballads, and quietly reads on till he is suddenly surprised at the tragedy and mystery that has been going on under his very eyes. It is a strong novel which is well worthy of perusal and re-reading.

A story of the development of the character of Peace Polly Schott who was early left an orphan and placed in charge of the household of a half brother eighteen years her senior. His misunderstanding of her nature and his constant desire to stir up "Peas Porridge Hot" might have warped her life had not her innate sterling qualities which overruled the influence come to the rescue. The story is pretty, interesting and most happy in its ending.

BOY HEROES, by EDWARD EVERETT HALE. 16mo, illustrated, cloth, D. Lothrop & Co. 1.00 So much of a true boy's life consists of the ideals which he almost unconsciously sets up in his mind as earthly models in some noble quality that this little volume of Mr. Hale's has a worthy mission. Those selected include the warrior Napoleon, the brave and chivalrous Bayard, the warm hearted Lafayette, the patriot Putnam and others.

BRYANT AND HIS FRIENDS, by JAMES GRANT WILSON, author of "Poets and Poetry of Scotland," etc. Fords, Howard & Hulbert.
