Saw two nostrils point to windward;
And a deer came down the pathway
Flecked with leafy light and shadow.

And his heart within him fluttered,
Trembled like the leaves above him,
Like the birch leaf palpitated,
As the deer came down the pathway.

Then upon one knee uprising,
Hiawatha aimed an arrow;

Scarce a twig moved with his motion,
Scarce a leaf was stirred or rustled,

But the wary roebuck started,
Stamped with all his hoofs together,
Listened with one foot uplifted,
Leaped as if to meet the arrow;
Ah! the singing, fatal arrow!

Like a wasp it buzzed, and stung him.

Dead he lay there in the forest,
By the ford across the river;
Beat his timid heart no longer,
But the heart of Hiawatha

Throbbed and shouted and exulted
As he bore the red deer homeward.

LXXVIII. THE IVY GREEN.

Oh, a dainty plant is the ivy green,

That creepeth o'er ruins old!

Of right choice food are his meals, I ween, In his cell so lone and cold.

The walls must be crumbled, the stones de

cayed,

To pleasure his dainty whim;

And the mouldering dust that

made

Is a merry meal for him. Creeping where no life is seen,

years have

A rare old plant is the ivy green.

Whole ages have fled and their works decayed,

And nations scattered been ;

But the stout old ivy shall never fade
From its hale and hearty green.

The brave old plant in its lonely days
Shall fatten upon the past;

For the stateliest building man can raise
Is the ivy's food at last.
Creeping where no life is seen,
A rare old plant is the ivy green.

LXXIX.-WORDS OF PURE GOLD.

PSALM XXIII.

The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul:

He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me

In the presence of mine enemies :

Thou anointest my head with oil: my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:

And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
