20, 21. Now the God of all peace, make you perfect in every good work, to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight through Jesus Christ.

JAMES.

CHAP. I. v. 27.-Pure religion, and undefiled before God and the Father, is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

II. 8 to 26.-If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself," ye do well. But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced for convicted] of the law as transgressors. For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. For he who said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now, if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. So speak ye, and so do, as they who shall be judged by the law of liberty. For he shall have judgment without mercy, who hath showed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth From hence against judgment. What doth it profit, my breth(v. 14) to the ren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not end is also ex- works,―can faith save him? If a brother, or sister tracted underthe be naked, and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things, which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works; show me thy faith, without thy works; and I will show thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works; and by works was faith made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, "Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness; and he was called the friend of God." Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only

Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by Joshua ii. 1, works, when she had received the messengers, and 4, &c. had sent them out another way. For as the body 1 Cor. iii. 2, without the spirit [or breath] is dead, so faith with- 13. out works is dead also.

III. 13.-Who is a wise man, and endued with knowledge among you? Let him show out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

17, 18.—But the wisdom which is from above, is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy: and the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them who make

II. 11, 12.-Dearly beloved, I beseech you, as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul; having your conversation honest among the Gentiles; that, whereas they speak against you as evil doers, they may, by your good works which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

Then follow several verses enjoining moral or social duties, which subject is continued in Chapter iii. IV. 8. And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves; for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

CHAP. I. v. 5 to 11.-And, beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he who lacketh these things is blind; and can not see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to

III. 7.-Little children, let no man deceive you; he who doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he [God] is righteous.

11. For this is the message which ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. 21, 22.-Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God; and whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things which are pleasing in his sight.

IV. 20, 21.-If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar; for he who loveth not his brother, whom he hath seen, how can he love God, whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God, love his brother also.
