XIII. 18 to 23.-Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. But he who received seed into stony places, the same is he who heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. He also who received seed among the thorns is he who heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. But he who received seed into the good ground, is he who heareth the word, and understandeth it; who also beareth fruit,* and bringeth forth, some a hundred fold, some sixty, some thirty.

58. And he did not many mighty works there [in his own country], because of their unbelief.

XIV. 31. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand and caught him [Peter when sinking into the water], and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

XV. 28.-Then Jesus answered and said unto her [the woman of Canaan], O woman, great is thy faith! be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her

daughter was made whole from that very hour.

XVII. 17, 18.—Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, how long shall I suffer you? Bring him [the lunatic son] hither to me. And Jesus rebuked the devil, and he departed out of him, and the child was cured from that very hour.

19, 20.-Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? And

that a mill-stone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

XXI. 21, 22.-Jesus answered and said unto Mark, xi.23,24, them [the disciples], Verily I say unto you, If ye and xvi. 17, 18. have faith and doubt not, ye shall not only do this —Luke, xvii. 6, to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this and x. 19.mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into John, xiv. 12, the sea, it shall be done. And all things whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall

receive.

31, 32.-Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, that the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed nim not; but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.*

CHAP. I. v. 14, 15.—Now after that John was put Matt. iv. 17. in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the Gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent ye, and believe the Gospel.

II. 5. This is the parallel passage to those Matt. ix. 2.marked in the margin, of which one has been Luke, v. 20. already given; and therefore this is not extracted.

Those who wish to see in what respect it differs,

can refer to the Bible.

IV. 40. This is a case similar to the preceding; Matt. viii. 26.-and all those which follow, without any extracts, Luke, viii. 25. and having merely a note of chapter and verse, are

similar cases.

V. 34.

36. As soon as Jesus heard the word which was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue,

And these signs John, xii. 48. shall follow them who believe; in my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents: and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.† LUKE.

This shews that faith was to be accompanied by divine power and inspiration, and therefore that these doctrines applied only to the Apostles and their inspired followers, who did actually receive such powers. Luke x. 19.-St. Paul after his shipwreck. Acts, xxviii. 5.

+ See Acts of the Apostles, in many parts, for instances of these miracles, in the Apostles and chosen disciples, who had specially received the Holy Ghost.

rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one who judgeth him. The word which I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. For I have not spoken of myself. But the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak: and I know that his commandment is life everlasting. Whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

XVI. 27. For the Father himself loveth you [his disciples], because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.

XX. 29.-Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed. Blessed are they who have not seen, and yet have believed.

ACTS.

CHAP. IV. v. 12.- [Peter to the rulers and elders]. Neither is there salvation in any other [than Jesus Christ]; for there is none other name under Heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

* This, and the passages quoted in the margin, shew clearly, that much relates only to the Apostles, and those to whom the Holy Ghost would thereafter be given. It is not possible to apply all this to Christians in general.

This passage, connected with what precedes and follows from v. 1 to 12, clearly shews that good works in the world are what Christ requires of his followers. The other verses are extracted on the question

of Works.
